Compliance Question Of The Week
Compliance Question Of The Week
Question:
Question #1: If the institution issues a nonrenewal or cancellation of athletics aid letter to a student-athlete who is currently on scholarship, when can the coach issue a tender using that aid for another student-athlete (or to a prospective student-athlete) for the next term or the next academic year?
Question #2: Can a recruited student-athlete practice at Indiana University for 14 days without being cleared?
Answer:
Answer #1: After Steve Morris, the Director of Compliance for Student Information and Fiscal Services at IU, sends the nonrenewal/cancellation of athletics aid letter to the student-athlete, the student-athlete has 14 days to request a hearing from the date of the letter. Once the 14 day period expires, the coach may award the aid for the next term or the next academic year.
Answer #2: NO!!!!! Bylaw 14.3.5.1.1 permits a student-athlete to participate in practice, but not competition, for two weeks without being cleared by the NCAA Clearinghouse. This does not mean that they can practice without being cleared by the training room or the compliance office (NCAA/BigTen/IU forms still need to be completed).
