Compliance Question Of The Week
Question:
Is it permissible for a student-athlete who is not included in your sport's Big Ten travel squad limits to sit on the bench during an away from home contest, even if he/she offers to pay his/her own way?
Answer:
No. The Big Ten Administrators Council voted during its October 2004 meeting to discontinue the practice of allowing student-athletes who are not on the travel squad to sit on the bench at away contests. Concerns about institutional liability with regard to nonparticipating student-athletes were noted. Please remember that only student-athletes who are on your certified eligibility list (CEL) may travel with your team, and you must observe the Big Ten Conference travel squad limits.
