Compliance Question Of The Week
Compliance Question Of The Week
Playing and Practice Seasons/ARA
Question:
We just received the following information from the Big Ten this morning. The issue came up due to basketball's midnight madness practice on Saturday at 12:01 a.m., but it pertains to any sport that overlaps in-season with out-of-season practice within a designated week during the academic year.
Basketball's practice week is Mon-Sun, and basketball practice starts Saturday. So within this Mon-Sun week, there is an overlap of "out-of-season" and "in-season." Given the new 17.1.5.5 (2 days off out of season), must the team take 2 days off this week; or, since this week includes the beginning of the playing season, must the team take only 1 day off?
Answer:
The team only has to take one day off during any week that includes in-season (e.g., 20 hours per week), instead of two days off. [NCAA/Brad H. interp on 10/13/04]
Local Sports Clubs
Question:
Can an IU athletics department coach or staff member be involved as an instructor, coach, administrator, or participant with a local sports club (e.g. Monroe County Youth Soccer, Hoosier Weightlifting Club, Indiana Swimming Team, Indiana Diving, Hoosierland Volleyball Club, Hoosier Wrestling Club)?
Answer:
Yes, provided the coach or staff member has completed the required local sports club documentation prior to their involvement with the local sports club, and for coaches, all prospects participating in the local sports club live within a 50 mile radius of IU-Bloomington. [NCAA/Brad H. interp on 10/12/04 clarifying NCAA staff interp on 07/07/04]
The local sports club information packets were distributed at the October 5, 2004 coaches compliance meeting. The information is due by November 1, 2004. Copies of the packets are attached for coaches and staff who did not attend the meeting. If you have any questions, please see Charnele.
