Indiana University Athletics
Compliance Question Of The Week
Question 1:
Is it permissible to place a cookie bouquet in a prospect's hotel room during his/her official visit?
Question 2:
What does a student-athlete need to do prior to practicing with an IU team during second semester if he/she did not participate on the team first semester? (e.g., mid-year enrollee, transfer, study abroad, injured, etc)
Answer 1:
No, consistent with the recently issued interpretation from the NCAA (S 11/10/04), it is no longer permissible to provide prospects' with or display anything that is personalized or creates a sense of entitlement for the prospect, or include any decorative items and special additions to any location the prospect will visit (e.g., hotel room, locker room, coach's office, conference room, arena) regardless of whether or not these items include the prospect's name or picture. Therefore, the intent of providing food items to prospects must be nutritional and not decorative. So, it would be permissible to leave cookies that aren't decorated in IU colors or in a shape that is identified with a certain sport in the room if you were counting that as one of the three meals that are (or the one snack that is) permissible each day.
Answer 2:
The student-athlete must be certified to practice!
Must be cleared academically. (Freshmen need to be certified by the Clearinghouse.) See Chip.
Must complete compliance paperwork. See Charnele.
Must be cleared medically. See your team's athletics trainer.
These three steps must be completed PRIOR to the student-athlete receiving athletics apparel/equipment OR practicing with your team. This includes weight training, conditioning, etc
