Compliance Question Of The Week
Question 1: If Indiana schedules a competition at a high school (e.g., wrestling at Brown County HS, soccer at North Central HS), can the high school keep the revenue from ticket sales for the event?Answer: No per 13.15.1.3 and NCAA staff interp from 11/29/89, the high school should not receive any funds in addition to actual and necessary expenses associated with rental of the facility (e.g., concessions revenue, gate revenue). Moreover, the high school should not charge either college team a premium on rent (they should not charge anything over the going rate for rental of their facility). Finally, all recruiting rules still apply. For example, any contact with prospects at the high school would have to occur during a contact period with a contactable prospect (per 13.1.1). Given the definition of a contact in 13.02.3, it would be very easy for a coach to have contact with a prospect because the coaches are putting themselves in a location where face-to-face encounters with prospects are likely to occur.or whether it is to be retained by the athletics department for the annual sale.Any questions? Contact Christian at cdpope@indiana.edu or 856-6074 for clarification. Thanks!
