Compliance Question Of The Week

Compliance Question Of The Week
September 26, 2005
Question:What is the best way to determine a prospect's graduation date from high school for purposes of contacting the prospect by phone or in person?
Answer:T he best way to determine a prospect's graduation date is from the questionnaire that the prospect completes. The good news is that questionnaires can be sent to a prospect at anytime (including prior to September 1 of the prospect's junior year in high school/June 15 after the sophomore year in high school for MBB), and there is no limit on the number of questionnaires that you may send. Therefore, it is permissible to send a questionnaire to a prospect each year in order to get updated information. You may also check with the prospect's coach. However, the compliance office strongly suggests that you don't rely on any other individuals or information (e.g., game programs) in order to determine the prospect's year of graduation.CLARIFICATION
In regards to last week's question of the week, Bylaw 16.6.1.2 permits institution's to reserve or secure lodging for all postseason events (other than conference tournaments) and at a reduced or special rate for parents, legal guardians and other immediate family members of a student-athlete who is a participant in the event. It is not permissible for IU to cover any portion of the cost of the lodging, including any cost associated with reserving or securing lodging.
