Question:Is it permissible for a coach or an athletics department staff member to be involved with a local sports club?
Answer:It depends on who you are...Athletics Department Staff Members who are not countable coaches (other than basketball specific staff members)Athletics department staff members who are not included in the institution's coaching limitations (e.g., director of athletics, academic advisor, director of volleyball operations) may be involved with a local sports club located in the institution's home community that includes prospects participating in any sport regardless of whether those prospects live within a 50-mile radius of the institution. It is not permissible for these noncoaching staff members to engage in any recruiting activities on behalf of the institution while participating in any activities with a local sports club team.Athletics Department Staff Members with Basketball specific duties:In basketball, a member of an institution's coaching staff or an institutional staff member with basketball specific duties (e.g., director of basketball operations, manager, administrative personnel) may not participate in coaching activities involving nonscholastic-based basketball teams, regardless of the age or gender of the participants involved in such teams. In addition, coaching staff members or an institutional staff member with basketball-specific duties may not participate on such teams that include individuals with eligibility remaining or that include individuals of prospect age or younger.Coaches of Sports Other Than Basketball:In sports other than basketball, an institution's coach may be involved as a participant or in instructional or coaching activities in the same sport for a local sports club or organization located in the Bloomington community, provided all prospects participating in said activities are legal residents of the area (within a 50 mile radius of the community).Coaches of All Sports:In all sports, an institution's coach may be involved as a participant or in instructional or coaching activities in a sport other than the coach's sport for a local sports club or organization located in the Bloomington community, provided all prospects participating in said activities are legal residents of the area (within a 50 mile radius of the community). For example, an IU men's basketball coach is permitted to coach a local sports club in the sports of men's golf or women's soccer, provided all prospects reside within a 50 mile radius of IU.If you (either a coach or athletics department staff member) are involved with a local sports club in any capacity (e.g., participant, director, administrator, coach) please notify Charnele as soon as possible.
