Compliance Question Of The Week
Compliance Question Of The Week
Question:
The vacay is nearly up and I've got student-athletes coming back. Can we train?
Answer:
As is always the case with CARA, the answer is: it depends! Find yourself in the groups below and act accordingly!
- In-Season Sports: As of right now, M+W Basketball, Wrestling; Swimming & Diving; Track and Field, Men's Tennis and Water Polo are in season. No-one else is*. Until Monday January 9th, when school recommences, you have unlimited in-season vacation hours to train your team and do not require a day off. Remember though that rest is a vital part of success!! When school starts Monday, you will return to the usual academic-year in-season rules: no more than 4 hours a day required athletic activity; no more than 20 such hours in your 7-day period and 1 day off must be given. Competition day counts as 3 hours (please use this rule judiciously and fairly) and there is no CARA permitted between midnight and 5 am.
*Rowing has an exception for a winter trip, but reverts to out-of-season as soon as the trip is done.
- Out-of-season Sports: This would be everyone else right now, although some go "in-season" quite soon. Until then, you can do NOTHING athletically-related with your student-athletes, although they can do voluntary stuff on their own. Remember that their voluntary activity, as always, may not be rewarded or punished, monitored or observed and may not be recorded or publicized. Once Monday January 9th (no earlier than 5 am) comes, you may begin your out-of-season academic year activity, which includes no more than 8 hours of CARA for the week; no more than 4 on any day; no more than 2 of the 8 can be skill instruction and 2 full days off must be given each week (Your 7-day declared week). There are no limits on the number of SAs who may participate in skill instruction at this time, except for Baseball, who may only have 4 guys at a time until January 15. And for Football, your Skill instruction would be video/film analysis, and NOT conducting FB-related activities.
- Once you go "in-season", you have the usual 20 hours / 4 per day max / 1 day off with 3 hours for competition.
ALSO:
- The exception which allows Student-Athletes in individual sports to request time with their coaches in summer ONLY exists in summer, not winter. So nothing for, tennis and golf, until you go back in-season, or until Monday.
- Safety Exception Sport coaches can be present for voluntary workouts, assuming they are truly voluntary and that the coach is providing safety and skill instruction and not conducting the workout. [17.x.7]. You may only be present for the voluntary activity requiring safety, and NOT for strength and conditioning (dryland).
- Remember that January 16 is Martin Luther King Day and as such, is an official school vacation day. No CARA of any kind may be conducted for teams out of season. You must be actively in-season to have CARA on that Monday. TI can count as a day-off it you have a day off.
