Compliance Question Of The Week
Compliance Question Of The Week
Question 1:
How often and when can I call prospects? (the following always includes family members of prospects).
Answer 1:
You may call prospects under the following conditions and restrictions:
i. July 1st after their junior year - once per week: most sports.
ii. One time between April 15 and May 31 during the junior year for Football. Then once a week from Sept. 1 later that year.
iii. Once per month for men's basketball on or after June 15th after the sophomore year. Then from August 1st before senior year, twice per week.
iv. Once in April, once in May, twice in June, three times in July all at the end of the junior year (and with conditions), then once a week from August 1st for Women's Basketball.
All and any transfers are allowed to receive only ONE call per week regardless of sport during their recruitment. And ONLY after we receive permission to talk.
Question 2:
After I've called my limit for the week (which always starts Sunday and ends Saturday) can I try call again?
Answer 2:
Nope, no way - don't try it. Even a voice mail / non answer / hang-up is impermissible.
Question 3:
Any exceptions to the above limits?
Answer 3:
Yes - several - see below:
i. On the five days preceding - and the two days of - an official visit - calls are unlimited. Make sure visit is approved by, and known to, the compliance office.
ii. Unlimited calls begin on the initial date for NLI signing (a Wednesday) and continue for three days (until the Friday midnight). Football has from 7 am Monday of signing week through 7 am Friday for unlimited calls.
iii. On the day of a permissible off-campus contact with a senior = unlimited calls.
iv. After NLI signing is done; calls are unlimited from all and any IU staff member. Same for transfers who sign $$ agreement. Not for walk-ons or some others though, so please check first.
From August 1st this year, non-coaching staff members will be able to call official visitors and their accompaniers during the travel stage and the visit. More later.
And after May 1, any walk-on who has given IU any financial deposit can be called and texted unlimited if we have a signed acceptance of admission.
Question 4:
Anything else worth knowing?
Answer 4:
Yes - you cannot make a call at all during the conduct of one of your games / meets / matches / rounds, etc. and not during one of theirs (the prospects) either. And you can take (receive) incoming calls from prospects at ANY time - their family too. Lastly, until NLI signing, only countable coaches can take such calls - non-coaching staff member should refer the call on immediately.
Question 5:
Can we text our recruits? Facebook / Tweet `em?
Answer 5:
No, no and no. E-mail is all until they sign an NLI, then go for it.
OK, so that was a very general and basic summary and the minute I send this out I am going to realize that I missed something, and probably something pretty important too! And many sports (especially basketball and football) have exceptions, so the above is a very general guide.
