Compliance Question Of The Week
Compliance Question Of The Week
Question:
Have there been any other CARA-related NCAA issues lately that we could learn from?
Answer:
Why yes, there has been! Here's some specific reminders from us to you:
1. Your student-athletes (SAs) MUST have at least one (two when not in-season) days off per week when no required athletically required activity is permissible. During full vacation weeks, no day off is required if you are in season.
2. SAs may come in of their own accord on their day(s) off, to voluntarily lift / run / kick / shoot / hit, etc. Countable sport coaches may NOT be present for this unless you have a safety exception in which case you may provide skill instruction and safety assistance but may not conduct the workout.
3. Strength and Conditioning coaches can be present and can conduct voluntary workouts.
4. Do NOT ask either your SAs or your strength coaches if voluntary workouts were completed (or anything pertaining to voluntary work for that matter).
5. Make sure your SAs know when their day off is, and for hour-counting when their work is voluntary and when it is required - especially if you have a safety exception. They must have the option to stop or to not do voluntary work.
6. Required activity in-season on the remaining 6 days "on" is limited to 20 hours per week with no more than 4 hours per day. The following activities are countable, and so are many others:
- Practice, required lifting and conditioning, skill instruction, competition, film review
- Athletically related activity called by captains/team members which is required or has consequences for not attending
- Athletic punishments for transgressions (e.g. running at 6 am because of missed class)
- Stretching or warm up/down which is either required OR has a countable coach present
- Short breaks between required activity during which SAs don't have time to do anything else (30 mins or less)
- Time spent waiting for practice to start or for a required meeting to start (if not at the SA's choice)
- Meetings called by either a coach OR the SA to discuss "athletically related" matters.
7. Non-countable activities include:
- Training Table / Meals (if no film or "team talks")
- Study Table
- Athletic Training (gets closer to counting if extensive athletically related activity becomes part of re-hab and is on top of practice hours)
- Recruiting Activity
- Promotional Activity
- Administrative Meetings (compliance, academic, team meetings which do not discuss the game/sport/coaching, etc.)
8. When out-of-season, you get 8 required hours per week, only 2 of which can be skill instruction or film. Warm up for skill instruction counts one way or another.
9. Nothing required in summer or on other vacay days unless you are actively in-season. Required = CARA = Countable.
Couple of others:
A. No practice of any kind -or other ARA - after a game/contest/competition.
B. No CARA between midnight and 5 am
C. No reward or punishment for voluntary activity
D. Competition counts as 3 hours.
Clearly there is a lot of stuff to know and get regarding CARA. I could go home later tonight and kick the dog because I forgot something important herein - or there'll be a CARA issue next week not specifically covered above. You get the picture. It'd take a long time to cover EVERYTHING here. Know what you can and can't do and when and PLEASE, call one of us if you are not sure.
