Compliance Question Of The Week
Compliance Question Of The Week
Question:
Next week is Spring Break, and although my team would love to be having fun in the sun, we'll be here in Bloomington. What type of practice activities can we set up, within our ARA limits? What happens if we are travelling for competition?
Answer:
This depends on whether your team is currently "in-season" or "out-of-season."
In-season sports may continue to practice over spring break, and normal ARA limits do not apply. Consider this official vacation period a vacation from our typical daily and weekly hour limitations! Additionally, IF your designated week falls completely within the spring break vacation, you do not have to take a day off. Please be diligent about checking to determine whether and where this day off may be necessary. Note that this is not a break meant to be abused. Remember, this is vacation for your team too - and like all regular college students, they enjoy time off.
Teams who are in-season and competing over the break also get a vacation from the typical travel requirements. During official vacation periods, the requirement of leaving no earlier than 48 hours prior to competition and departing no later than 36 hours after competition are waived. Therefore, if you leave travel within the period of spring break (12:01 a.m. March 14 to 11:59 p.m. March 22), your travel restrictions are waived.
If your team is spending REQUIRED time on-campus during the vacation period due to mandatory practice, they are also eligible to receive per diem. Teams who are in Bloomington voluntarily are not eligible for per diem.
Out-of-season sports get the opposite treatment. These teams may NOT schedule any ARA activities during an official vacation period. Therefore, any mandatory team practices/conditioning/meetings are prohibited. This is truly a "spring break" for your team, who may VOLUNTARILY participate on their own.....and we all know what voluntary means, right?
Out of season teams won't be travelling for competition, thus the waiver on travel rules won't apply. Similarly, students on campus voluntarily will NOT be eligible for per diem.
