Compliance Question Of The Week
Compliance Question Of The Week
Question:
Today's question is extraordinarily similar to one which we sent out in early June last year - but is much the same in terms of what's expected. Q: As a coach, what type of activities can I supervise or require for my student-athletes in the summer?
Answer:
A: There are different answers for different sports - so read along. No matter what though, all athletically-related activity by student-athletes in summer must be voluntary!
Team Sports: Sorry, you can't observe your student-athletes training, working out, playing in open gym, etc. Same goes for ALL athletics staff members in terms of observing or being involved in the athletically-related activities of team sports members. (Apart from Rowing and Water Polo who have the safety exception).
Individual Sports: You may be present to provide instruction for your (returning only) student-athletes, provided they have requested your presence at their voluntary workouts. This only covers actual skill instruction activities, and does not allow you to observe their strength or conditioning workouts at any time.
Safety Exception Sports: You may be present to provide safety instruction for your student-athletes, but may only be at workouts when the "danger" inherent in your sport is occurring. This exception allows you to supervise and conduct skill instruction, but will not cover strength and conditioning activities at any time.
*Remember that these rules apply to returners (student-athletes) and not automatically to incomers (prospects). While certain prospects can do certain things (once compliance has signed off on their paperwork), please ask us if you have questions about prospects. Next week's QoW will cover more prospect stuff. And see below for the necessary paperwork.
Question:
Q: Camp season is now in full swing. Can my incoming freshmen and transfers who are already here on campus work my camps as counselors? Can they volunteer? Play in camp games?
Answer:
A: No. Never. IU camps are not eligible to employ prospects as counselors, even if they have signed an NLI, signed a tender or are otherwise walking on to your program. Any prospect must first have initially enrolled full-time (i.e. in fall) and started classes at a four-year institution prior to being eligible to serve in any capacity at an IU camp. Prospects who are around for summer may either observe your camps (from a public area) or pay to participate in the camps (other than FB), but that is it. No volunteering or playing-in either.
