Compliance Question Of The Week
Compliance Question Of The Week
Question:
My team is just yards and a wall away from me this summer, voluntarily working out and trying to get themselves better for the new season. Can I help them?
Answer:
Quite simply, NO! You must stay away from your team, however "accidental" or "incidental" the contact is, it is still inappropriate and impermissible. Just like the Big Ten reminded us the other day, there's no "tweeting" about the voluntary summer work, well so there's no watching of it, guiding of it, or correcting of it. We call that coaching and you can't do it in summer. Strength coaches can do some conditioning-related stuff so they can have some access to your team, but the rest of you guys....no. If you need a list of who can't do what, let me know. Definition of Voluntary is below, along with the bylaw reminding us that summer work is all entirely voluntary. Consequences for impermissible coaching include limiting coaching time and practice opportunities when coaching is permissible again.
- Safety Exception Coaches (Swimming, diving, wrestling, rowing, water polo, field events and steeplechase): You can help your athletes with some guidance as long as it is voluntarily requested; there are no consequences for not showing up / failing to work hard and you are not directing the workout, simply assisting with it.
- Same for Individual Sports in Summer only (tennis, golf, track, CC).
- Volleyball, soccer, baseball, softball, field hockey: same as football and basketball: Stay away = no watching / walking by / working out at same time / `occasionally' crossing the gym, weight-room, field or court / no coaching meetings, etc.
