Compliance Question Of The Week
Question:
Anything I need to do about my incoming freshmen and transfers here training this summer?
Answer:
Absolutely! Complete this form right now, get your prospect a physical and get caught up, because a ton of people have done this already, and for THAT, we thank you. If there are none of your freshies here, and there won't be until pre-season or the start of school, please check that on the form and get it back. Again - thanks to those that have done this already. NO-ONE incoming gets to use our facilities and train - or be coached in any fashion - without this completed form.
Question:
Can my strength coach teach my student-athletes how to shoot, to block, to hit and to pass?
Answer:
No. Strength coaches teach strength, agility, fitness, speed, running, safe lifts and general healthy-ness (sorry, y'all). They do NOT coach your sport.
Question:
So, what if my student-athletes come to me and ask for some help with their skills and play this summer?
Answer:
Like incontinence, the answer is: "depends". Individual sports...you can help your returners in this way; same for safety exception sports (if they are doing the dangerous activity at the time - not in the office, etc.) For other sports - mostly all the team sports - you do not get to do the slightest smidgeon of player-coaching this summer. Even if asked. The most you can do is give them some game tape and wish them the best. It's great to be helpful, eh?
Question:
But can my Director of Ops meet with my players to share thoughts on how to improve oneself?
Answer:
Perhaps if the meeting is instigated by the student-athlete AND involves only advice and tips on character, academics, general life-improving attitude stuff, then OK. But if it involves any sharing of tactical or technical knowledge of the game, anything we would call coaching, or any info on how to be a better player (other than trying harder), then the answer is no. It's no for summer and it's no forever. Check the name: "noncoaching staff member".
Question:
Can I at least take a student-athlete out for a meal this summer?
Answer:
Now THAT you can do. Once you've checked with Jenna on your occasional meal count that is. You can also give them an occasional ride; have them get academic or athletic training room help (returners we're talking about here), and you can even employee them, if done correctly. Incomers (freshies and transfers) are slightly different, so always check first when dealing with them cats.
