Compliance Question Of The Week
Compliance Question Of The Week
Question:
July 1st is here and that can only mean one thing: Phone call time for many. With all the back and forth lately about new phone call rules (of which there now aren't any), we must not forget what the ACTUAL rules are. So.....
Q. I'm a tad turned around here......can I still call prospects...like, EVER?
Answer:
A. Of COURSE you can - what would life be without recruiting calls? Let's break it down:
1. We know only permissible callers can call - that's step 1. Who are they? Coaches and - with occasional and special exceptions - one or two other IU staff members. 13.1.3.4 for details, or: ASK!
2. FB, WBK and MBK have different calling rules (see below), but everyone else can start calling "rising seniors" - in this case 2012 grads - on July 1st.
3. You can call once per week. After your countable call, don't call again.
4. Volleyball, Softball, Baseball, Track & Field/CC get unlimited calls to seniors/transfers during CONTACT periods. Everyone else: always once per week (other than exceptions below)..
5. Call week is Sunday through Saturday, so you can call July 1st or 2nd and then start a new week for another once-per-week call on Sunday July 3rd. For example.
6. A Countable call is purely CONTENT related. If there's recruiting content (to whomsoever, including on a machine or to Granny G) it's countable. If the call is longer than a couple of minutes and you are claiming "noncountable", then you must document that clearly on your chosen documentation method.
7. Dropped calls must also be clearly documented if you call back - and if you do call back, it must be pretty much immediately.
8. Some exceptions exist regarding the one-call-per-week thing, which are: unlimited calls on the day of a permissible off-campus contact; unlimited on the day of (and 2 days following) your NLI signing Wednesday; 5 days before an approved official visit; and (and this one is for ALL staff members) travel to, the duration of, and travel home from an official visit. Check 13.1.3.3 if you don't believe me.
9. For transfers, you can call THEM once a week too - for a JUCO, this is at any time (though remember that you cannot have ANY in-person contact with a JUCO prospect who was a nonqualifier and is still in his/her first year of attendance there). 4-year transfers may only be called (or called about) once permission to contact has been received.
10. Once an individual has signed an NLI - or (NEW RULE ALERT) has applied, been admitted, signed acceptance of admission and deposited (all of these) - there is no limit on the amount of calls, electronic communications, or on WHO can communicate.
11. ALL calls must be documented in whatever way you have chosen to document your calls. See below for more.
FB rule: ONE call between April 15th and May 31st of a prospect's junior year, then nothing until September 1st, when you go to one call per week - same as above. Unlimited in contact period. In NLI week, FB gets Mon-Fri to make unlimited calls to potential signers.
WBK rules - various call frequencies beginning April of the Junior year, including 3 in July. From August on, it's one per week - same as above. Unlimited to seniors/transfers in contact period.
MBK rules - One call monthly starting June 15th after sophomore year, then one monthly until August 1st before senior year; then twice per week. (This is the rule everyone would have had, but it got axed already. MBK keeps it tho). Like the other sports with a defined recruiting calendar, MBK gets unlimited calls to seniors and transfers during the contact periods in their sport.
