Compliance Question Of The Week
Question 1:
Seriously, what is the truth behind the (much joked-about) fruits, nuts and bagels legislation?
Answer 1:
Beginning August 1st, we will be permitted to provide fruit, nuts and bagels to our student-athletes at any time. Previous rules allowed us to provide energy bars, electrolyte drinks/boosters, etc. but did not allow institutions to provide actual food items. Counter-intuitive right? Now we are also permitted to provide these basic nutritional items as a snack at any point.
Of course, as previously mentioned many times, these bagels may come in a variety of flavors, but cannot be accompanied by any type of spread, jam or condiment. Cream cheese would constitute a recruiting advantage - or so they say! Add anything to the "fruit, nuts and bagels" and what you got there is an occasional meal. And you only get a limited amount of them.
Question 2:
I couldn't be more ready to send out our new postcards come August 1st. They are huge, and have a snazzy photo-shopped picture of our staff flying over Memorial Stadium on the front. Sound good?
Answer 2:
You'll have to tone down the postcard design in order to mail them out under the new legislation - starting on or after August 1st, 2009. Postcards must be no larger than 4 ¼ x 6 inches (traditional size) and may contain only "Indiana University" and the IU logo OR an athletics logo on one side. The other side must be plain and can contain no pre-printed text. Hope you have good handwriting!
If your staff is already using note cards, the design on the postcards can be identical - the guidelines are indeed exactly the same for designs of postcards as they are for notecards. Please be sure to work with the compliance office if you are planning any major changes to the designs. You may also continue to send "unaltered" blank postcards issued by the U.S. Postal Service, and sent as general correspondence.
