Compliance Question Of The Week
Question:
Benefits for Current Student-Athletes: My team is on the road and a parent wants to treat us to free stuff. Is this OK?
Answer:
NO! Although parents may feed your team when you're out on the road, no other "tangible" benefits are permissible. Parents / friends / family may not pay for your team to go to a movie, the zoo or Six Flags. Unless it's free to the General Public OR your own sport budget is paying for "reasonable entertainment" while on the road, it should not happen. On the road or at home. There IS a way to have parents donate to the institution (Varsity Club) and then turn the value of that donation into certain benefits (like tickets to a pro game donated by a booster to IU, then reissued to you - 16.7.1.1) but it should not be done directly, on the fly, nor without pre-approval.
