Compliance Question Of The Week
Compliance Question Of The Week
Question:
Summer is wearing down, (believe it or not) and I forget if I can coach my team or not? What's the story?
Answer:
Summer is still hands-off, everyone! (Well, nearly everyone).
Here's some details:
- Coaches do not get to be in the weight room with their team...period. Only strength and conditioning coaches should be around the student-athletes in the weight room.
- If you don't have a safety exception, or an individual sports exception, you should not be coaching your student-athletes on or off the practice arena.
- If you DO have the above exceptions, you may only respond to a request from your student-athletes to be coached, and then only provide safety and skill instruction.
- If you have a Local Sports Club, participation in that is still voluntary and should be documented (the LSC membership that is) with our office.
- Please don't observe your SAs doing voluntary workouts if you do not have the safety or individual sport exceptions.
- Individual sport exception applies only to returners and NOT to incomers.
- ALL incomers need to be processed and cleared by compliance and the athletic training staff BEFORE doing anything athletically related in our facilities. Yes, even now. And in August too.
- Even if someone is here the day before your pre-season starts and they try to train, they need to be cleared first. It's a rule.
- The safety/indiv. sport exceptions apply to the activity in question (i.e. the dangerous or individual activity) and NOT to the weight room or running.
- Don't film voluntary summer activity.
- The only people who should be at voluntaries are: SAs, S+C coaches (coaching S+C NOT the sport); athletic trainers and student managers. None of these people may coach the sport or report back to the coaches about attendance or effort, etc.
- Do not use any athletic activity for punishment for misdemeanors. Talk to me if you need help with this.
- Disgruntled student-athletes who are tired, overworked and frustrated often begin to loudly discuss their "voluntary requirements" (Oxymoron of the day). Please be sure that all your SAs understand they are participating voluntarily now, and with no repercussions.
Question:
What do I need to know about getting my team ready to go for when I CAN coach them again?
Answer:
August pre-season teams (fall sports): you should be squared away with your report dates, meetings, schedule and such by now. If not, why?
Our on-line compliance form system will be up and running by middle of next week (we hope by Wednesday) and we will contact you to share the links and instructions which you should pass on to your SAs -likkety-split I would imagine.....
Other sports (fall and spring): our NCAA forms meeting will be on SUNDAY AUGUST 28th in the Business school, room 219, with freshmen/transfers at 1 pm and returners at 2:15 pm. You will also receive information about the on-line compliance form system, only a little later in August (maybe by the week of the 8th).
As always, no-one gets to practice or receive any gear until he or she has completed all their compliance forms, attended a detailed rules education meeting (see above) and received an athletic training "OK". At that point, Jenna sends out an e-mail "releasing" the individuals on your team to practice and get gear. Coaches may not require their teams to be back or to start practicing until school starts on Monday 29th August, 2011- though you can and should require them to be at the Sunday compliance meeting assuming they wish to be on your team.
Other than an occasional meal, you may not provide any benefits (meals, paid activities, etc.) to your SAs until school starts, and then normal rules apply. Just ask!
