Compliance Question Of The Week
Compliance Question Of The Week
Question:
Can I cancel a student-athlete's aid during the year if he/she repeatedly misses class, fails to attend study hours, and continually shows up late for practice?
Answer:
Yes. Under NCAA rules, the tender is allowed to have other `binding requirements/conditions' listed on it. Due to some changes made last year, IU now has the following statement listed on our financial aid tenders "Cancellation or reduction can occur anytime during the period of award based on compliance with published team and/or department rules". This statement allows you to cancel aid during the period of the award (or during the year) provided you have given each and every member of your team a copy of your team rules at the beginning of the academic year. This also requires you to provide compliance with a copy of your team rules each academic year along with a team roster with each athlete signing off that they have received a copy of said team rules. This needs to be done within the first week of school. Note that this does not mean that the student wouldn't have the right to appeal the cancellation or reduction of aid.
15.3.4.2.2 Nonathletically Related Conditions.
An institutional financial aid agreement may include non-athletically related conditions (e.g., compliance with academics policies or standards, compliance with athletics department rules or policies) by which the aid may be reduced or canceled during the period of the award. (Adopted: 4/23/08).
