Compliance Question Of The Week
Compliance Question Of The Week
Question #1:
If my incomer was recruited, may he or she receive outside scholarship money related to athletic ability?
Answer #1:
No. A recruited Prospective Student-Athlete is not eligible to receive outside financial aid if the award has any relationship to athletic ability. Many outside scholarships that our PSAs receive have athletics as a component. Therefore, for incoming PSAs to be able to retain any outside scholarship money where athletic ability was a consideration in awarding the scholarship, they MUST not have been recruited by IU (there are narrow exceptions that could allow a PSA to receive outside aid that was based in part on athletics, but it is hard to get - check with Kathy).
Question #2:
What does it mean to be "recruited" by IU?
Answer #2:
There are different ways the NCAA will consider a PSA to have been recruited. Specifically, the following will trigger "recruited" status: initiating or arranging more than one phone call to the PSA or their parents for the purpose of recruitment; the PSA making an official visit; the PSA signing an NLI or tender; or off-campus contact with the PSA. [13.02.13.1].
