Compliance Question Of The Week
Compliance Question Of The Week
Question:
So, all these 2010s are committing faster than Rickerby in the 100. What can I do about it?
Answer:
This is how permissibly publicizing prospects works (at IU):
1. Once an NLI is signed (Nov 11, Feb 3, April 14 for this next group) and you've confirmed with Kathy Arnold that the tender is good, then those individuals can be pretty much publicized without limit from then on.
2. Same for an individual who may not be eligible to sign an NLI (transfer or it's outside the signing period) who signs an offer of financial aid - publicize them once Kathy has OKayed it.
3. BUT.....the others....those vital walk-ons that are so important to many teams...well, they must NOT be publicized until they have signed the IU "PSA Acceptance of Admission." Here's the process for getting that done....
a. Let Anne Rohlman (Initial Eligibility, Admissions and Recruiting Officer) know your committed walk-on's names and hopefully IU `UID #' (they've been offered admittance remember, so they will have a University ID # - by definition).
b. Anne will generate one of these forms for you (you can also do the form yourself and send it to her) then we will get it signed by the Admissions Office confirming that we've offered Admission.
c. We'll get the Admissions-signed version back to you and you send it to your walk-on(s) for their signature - their "signed acceptance of admission".
d. When (and only when) that signed form is returned to you, let Anne know and share the info with your Media Relations person - because that's why we're doing this - to publicize the walk-ons. The form does nothing else. Get the original `signed-by-all' copy back to Anne, keep your own copy and enjoy reading about your legally "signed" walk-on!
Some coaches use the form as a "commitment" letter for their walk-ons, but it makes no difference in terms of them changing their mind or being recruited elsewhere, unlike the NLI. But have at it.
And the form does not even satisfy that new condition/rule that allows us to text message (or use other electronic communication) with a walk-on once they have deposited and it's after May 1. For that, they need to have deposited. Also, dumb as it is, none of the above actions allows us to ever make unlimited phone calls to these walk-on individuals - let's hope that changes soon. Why do the electronic thing without the phone call? Wow.
So, to sum up - IF you want to publicize your recruits, follow steps 1, 2 or 3 above and especially if you want to publicize WALK-ONS, (Step 3) there's quite a lot to do. But we help: that's why we're here.
