Compliance Question Of The Week
Compliance Question Of The Week
Question:
Question 1: School is nearly in, my team is heading back to town, freshies are arriving. I might as well just go ahead and have a practice and a meal at my house, right? (Fall sports can probably skip this question now...)
Answer:
Answer 1: WRONG! Your incoming freshmen (and transfer) prospects are still just that until Tuesday September 2nd, 2008 - prospects. Regardless of scholarship, or walk-on status, you may not mandate any activity for your incomers - or returners! No practice until all your team has been processed via the Compliance Office and Sports Medicine. No ARA in Summer.
So, what CAN you do?: -Returners can use our facilities, have an occasional meal (one between now and school starting is "occasional"; two is excessive) and may use IU equipment and facilities. If desperate, and with Coach / Equipment Manager approval they can maybe even get some old training gear. -You can meet with returners, if they initiate this, assuming that no countable athletic related activity occurs. Safety Exception sports may use that exception to work with their athletes in Voluntary Workouts - do not "conduct" these workouts please.
You May NOT: -Do any athletic activity with your incoming student-athletes - period. Safety exceptions CAN supervise activity ONLY if the prospect has been in summer school here and already triggered (a type of) student-athlete status. -Walk-Ons in sports other than basketball may not use any of our facilities until 9/2, unless such facilities are open to the general public. Such individuals may not receive coaching from any IU coach - including Strength and Conditioning coaches. (Football has exception to this too, but they're already in-season!) -Any prospect MAY get their medical / physical check at any time, but cannot receive treatment until they have triggered student-athlete status (been in summer school). -No incoming prospect may receive any occasional meal or any other benefit until 9/2 - unless such an individual has been at IU's summer school. -Strictly speaking, any off-campus contact between your current student-athletes and any prospects is impermissible until the first day of class - the same criterion that would make them a transfer. But, common sense allows for some low-level, non-organized off-campus interaction from Wednesday 27th on - that's move in / dorm open day, so we "kinda-sorta" consider them an IU person for certain things then.
NOTE: Prospects who have `moved' to Bloomington and joined a Local Sports Club also have no standing as an IU student-athlete until 9/2. Being a member of the LSC does not entitle these individuals to any IU assistance in academic or medical areas. Only if such individuals have been in summer school may they receive such assistance. Finally, the practice of having such prospects do this will be ending after this summer: we will no longer permit individuals who move to Bloomington after H.S. graduation (and before IU initial enrollment), to change their residency and join a LSC as a local resident - per Big Ten!
Question:
Question 2: September 1st is close and for most this means you can mail / e-mail your rising Junior prospects - 2010 graduates. As September 1st falls on Monday - LABOR DAY - this year, there is no mail pick-up or delivery, so what can you do to get your mailings done?!
Answer:
Answer 2: You may give Cheryl (mailroom) only your out-of-state mailings on Friday 29th August (after 1 pm). These mailings will be collected late Friday, processed Saturday and will be delivered Tuesday 2nd, or Wednesday 3rd. ANY INDIANA (in-state) mail will NOT be permitted to go out Friday 29th - you will have to wait until Tuesday September 2nd to mail to Indiana residents who are rising Juniors. So, how about this for a radical suggestion...? E-mail on Monday 1st! You'll be here anyway - we got Compliance Meetings that day! A recent memo was circulated to help all staff keep up with what can and can't be mailed and how/to whom. But don't hesitate to contact us with questions.
