Compliance Question Of The Week
Compliance Question Of The Week
Question 1:
What the heck is ARA anyway?
Answer 1:
It stands for (Countable) Athletically Required Activity and it refers to the amount of time you can require of the student-athletes to engage in athletically related stuff, like practice, skill instruction, weights, running, film, coaching meetings, etc. There are very strict limits on how much one can require...8 hours per week max in "off" season and 20 per week when "in" season. NEVER more than 4 hours max per day within the overall limits. Two days off per week must be given to individuals in out of season time and one day off when In-season. Anything else is voluntary.
Question 2:
When I am doing off-season skill instructions, which can only be done for a maximum of 2 hours per week, can other student-athletes be hanging around in background of facility, doing their own thing, doing re-hab, etc. while the permitted 4 work out? Can the next group be there watching and "waiting"?
Answer 2:
Basically, this is a No - only 4 may be in there at any one time between now and September 15th (if you are out of season through then) and anyone else should NOT be present. If they are present = they are using hours and time = you must record it. We have been somewhat more relaxed with people doing re-hab if they HAVE to be in the same facility and cannot do their work elsewhere. But if their re-hab is playing your sport and you have them next to the permissible four, then I would start counting it. There was an NCAA proposal to add a second facility so you could work out 2 or more groups of 4 at a time - and it failed. The obvious implication is that you can't have more than 4 student-athletes in one site at one time. Also, your players doing "voluntary workouts" in view of coaches makes it not voluntary and would be seen as required activity - and thus must be counted. It's not a good idea now to be messing around with your hours, Sportsfans. That's just a word of `friendly'.....
