Compliance Question Of The Week
Compliance Question Of The Week
Question:
I want to run my program on pretty much a full-time, 24-7 basis. Any issues with that?
Answer:
No issues for you, Coach, but for your team - absolutely. ANYTHING you require them to do which is ATHLETICALLY related must count towards your hourly limits.
Read on: - We watch film during our team meals and discuss athletic performance. Countable or not? - Count it.
- Student-Athletes come in an hour before practice to get treated and taped? Does it count towards the hours? - No
- What about study tables? No. Lifting and Running? Yes if required / no, if voluntary and sport coaches aren't present.
- I tell the team to be ready to go at 4 pm, and they are. I get delayed and they wait till 4:30 before I get there. Countable hours? - Yes - they can't leave or do something else, so you gotta count that. Also count: travel team between countable activity; and any break less than 30 minutes between 2 CARA.
- A student-athlete comes by my office to talk about not playing much - count it? - Depends. If you talk generally about their attitude, effort, demeanor, etc. then you don't have to count it, as that's not directly athletically-related. But if you start drawing Xs and Os, talking about coaching activities and their athletic performance, then yes: it becomes countable.
- So, if a SA wants to watch film on their day off with me, can I help out? No - your presence makes it countable, same as if it were required.
- You're telling me that I have to turn down a request from a student athlete to help him/her get better at certain times? - Yes, that is what we are telling you.
- Wow.
- What about "Captain's Practices" where I'm not there? - Depends if they are mandatory or if you get reports if someone doesn't show. Are the captains forcing team members to go? Then it's countable. Voluntary activity has to be unrewarded, unpunished, unreported-on and, well, voluntary.
OK, that's enough: just bear in mind that although WE live this life full-time every day, our student-athletes have many other expectations, requirements and responsibilities. If we ignore those, we are taking steps towards problems related to CARA. If you ever have any questions, confusion or issues, please let's talk about them and figure it out together.
