Compliance Question Of The Week
Compliance Question Of The Week
Question:
Talk to me about phone call rules dear compliance officer¡for I have not heard enough of them.
Answer:
Here's some bullet points:
- Starting July 1st, you get one phone per week to senior prospects (2 for MBK starting August 1).
- The "Week" starts Sunday at midnight + 0.0000¡Þ1 second and ends at midnight the following Saturday.
- Once you make a countable call (i.e. talk with anyone about IU OR leave a message about recruiting regardless of the call length) that is IT for the week. Do not try to call again, even if you know there's no one there, etc.
- Short "call me back" type messages which do not have recruiting content are not countable.
- Neither are no answers / no message calls.
- Any call which is "unusual" (i.e. a long message / granny can't find the kid / call was dropped but you called right back, etc.) should be documented as such on your folder / CyberWeb / log. Contemporaneous documentation is always required.
- Five or so 1 minute no-answer calls (going to voice mail so gets recorded) can be summarized on logs as ¡°several noncountable messages¡± or something.
- You can't call someone during YOUR contest or during theirs.
- Prospects (and family) can call you anytime as often as they want at their expense. Call backs by you are subject to all rules. Incoming calls do NOT need to be documented for compliance purposes, but might not be a bad idea for organizational reasons.
- If you have an 800 number, prospects (and co.) can only use it when they are old enough to be called by you.
- Unlimited calling can be done:
i. On the day of an off-campus visit. Note both on logs (visit and extra calls).
ii. Five days leading up to an approved Official Visit ¨C and for the 48 hours of the visit (see interp below). For a visit starting on a Friday, you can start the unlimited calling on the Sunday. If an official visit is cancelled after you¡¯ve made >1 call, report it to Anne on THIS form.
iii. During your NLI signing period ¨C varies per sport, so know your rules.
iv. After they sign that NLI, all bets are off. And as there¡¯s no gambling, that¡¯s a good thing.
- All these rules are covered in 13.1.3 on pages 83 to 87 ¨C and this section also included "permissible callers" which we can cover another day. Meantime, ask us if ANYONE other than a countable coach is thinking about calling a prospect (or family/coach, etc.)
- Obviously, this info is not all-inclusive, but those are the main things to keep in mind.
