Compliance Question Of The Week
Compliance Question Of The Week
Question:
With exams looming, and our athletes wanting to maximize GPA's, what can we ask of them during this CRUCIAL academic period?
Answer:
If you are a sport IN-SEASON (Men's and Women's Basketball, Wrestling, Men's and Women's Swimming and Diving, Track and Field) OR a sport in POST-Season (M. Soccer / Football).....
You may continue with your full in-season 20 hours per week / one day off per week activities. All that is asked is that you bear in mind that finals week is December 10th through the 14th and any extra time off you can give the athletes to prepare and study would no doubt be much appreciated by them. Please report activity as per normal on the ARA log.
You are currently in 8 hours a week of required activity, of which no more than 2 hours can be skill-related. You can have the entire squad for 2 hours, or do skill training in smaller numbers, but each individual student-athlete's skill related activity can be no more than 2 hours. The other 6 hours must be weights, conditioning, meetings, etc. Video analysis counts as SKILL INSTRUCTION!!
You must also give your athletes 2 days off per week while in your 8-hour a week, out-of-season period.
Please record all out-of-season activity on the ARA log as either "Skill Inst", "S & C" or "Day Off"...there should be no "Practice" or "Competition" when out-of-season. "Meetings" are considered skill instruction if they address the performing of your sport. Meetings which are administrative, academic or compliance related do not need to be listed as they are non-countable....same as promotional activity. Anything in the "other" category....well, just ask!
ALSO....bylaw 17.1.6.2 states that no required ARA may take place during Finals week OR the week prior to Finals. For IU, finals are December 10th through the 15th, and so the week starting NEXT Monday, December 3rd is the "week prior to finals" and you may NOT require any activity during that time until school reconvenes in January OR until your second in-season segment begins. So, make the most of this week, until Sunday 2nd December at midnight, because everything after that for you guys is voluntary...weights, running, fitness, meetings, etc......ALL must be voluntary next week on!!

- Post -Season teams (Men's Soccer and Football) do not need to take a day off during this time period, at the coaches' discretion.....!
- Diving - your 1st segment ends on December 8th, so after that nothing can be required until segment 2 begins.
