Compliance Question Of The Week
Compliance Question Of The Week
Today's question is for all of you who consider yourselves to be proactive, organized and otherwise enjoy planning ahead. We're covering the new Big Ten eligibility rules, which come into effect August 1, 2011:
Question 1:
Next year, will my student-athletes still need to be academically eligible in order to receive their athletics aid?
Answer 1:
No! Beginning August 1, 2011 student-athletes no longer need to be considered academically eligible in order to receive a scholarship. They must be otherwise eligible for financial aid under all other NCAA and IU legislation, but you now have the option of providing aid to a student-athlete who is not academically eligible, and therefore not competition eligible during that semester. Just providing a little extra flexibility for student-athletes who you'd like to keep on aid while they work to right their proverbial academic ship.
Rule 15.01.5 - Eligibility of Student-Athletes for Athletically Related Aid. EFFECTIVE AUGUST 1, 2011, student-athletes shall be eligible to receive athletics aid if otherwise eligible (for aid) under NCAA and institutional regulations. Conference rules no longer will require the student-athlete be academically eligible in order to receive athletics aid.
Question 2:
What about next year's minimum GPA requirements for 1st semester freshmen? Are those changing?
Answer 2:
Why, yes! For freshmen student-athletes enrolling anytime after August 1, 2011, the minimum 1.65 GPA requirement has gone the way of the dinosaurs for all freshmen completing the fall semester and continuing on at IU. Your current 1st semester freshmen student-athletes (i.e. right now) and any athletes who enroll as freshmen prior to August 1, 2011 will still be required to meet this minimum GPA requirement after the first semester of enrollment. Additionally, mid-year transfers who enter IU as a freshman will continue to need to have a 1.65 GPA upon arrival, but that's not a problem because they won't be admitted to IU with a transfer GPA < 2,00,="" which="" is="" the="" iu="" admissions="" requirement.="" see="" below:="">
14.3 FRESHMAN ACADEMIC REQUIREMENTS
Rule 14.3.1.B - Minimum GPA Requirement (1.65 Rule). EFFECTIVE FOR STUDENT-ATHLETES FIRST ENROLLING FULL-TIME ON OR AFTER AUGUST 1, 2011, Rule 14.3.1.B has been eliminated as a requirement for continuing student-athletes at Big Ten institutions. A TRANSFER WHO ENROLLS MIDYEAR AS A FRESHMAN WILL CONTINUE TO BE REQUIRED TO PRESENT A MINIMUM 1.65 CONFERENCE GPA (as well as presenting at least 12 transferrable credits for each term enrolled at the previous institution). Two notes:
A. Rule 14.3.1.A (completion of 12 units per term ) remains in place for all freshmen student-athletes. There has been no change in this requirement. (This does not mean passing 12 units per term, but they must complete 12 units per term as a freshman.)
B. Please be aware of the above-noted effective date of this change. Current freshmen student-athletes and any freshman student-athlete enrolling midyear 2010-11 will continue to be required to meet the 1.65 minimum.
Soon we'll be discussing the new NCAA legislation coming your way this summer, so file this information away for next year as you plan for 2011-12!
Anitra and Linda continue to be our go-to people for helping sort through these specific academic rules. And Kathy for financial aid.
