Compliance Question Of The Week
Compliance Question Of The Week
Question:
What are the general conditions for keeping SAs on campus over break?
Answer:
Well, as you all know so well, last week's QoW covered Countable Athletically Related Activities (CARA) pretty well, so you know that. But, just in case you were otherwise occupied, only teams who are now officially in-season can have CARA between now and January 9th, 2012. If you are not counting the days as in-season, then, as the great Zen Masters advise: do nothing.
As for expenses, you may provide an institutionally-agreed upon amount (check with the Business Office, but it's in the $25 per day range I believe) to cover room and board for any SA who is required to be here on campus for practice or competition purposes. And
- You may help with required expenses starting today (12.16.11) at 4 pm - so, dinner - through Sunday January 8th at 4 pm.
- Any days between those dates that you do not require your SAs to be on campus for practice or competition are off days for CARA and no expenses may be given.
- Any SA who lives at home may not receive the expenses (though can get team meals).
- If you compete during this time, then do not double-dip with team meals AND per diem expenses. One or the other: not both. Same with money and meals - it's either or.
- Let Jenna, Kathy or Ian know if you have questions about these benefits.
And what about any mid-year enrollees? What's their deal?
As always, this depends on the sport, but generally:
Well, they can't get expenses until they are fully processed by compliance and added to the roster - and that takes time, work and an appointment with compliance! Plus, only in-season teams could add anyone before 1/9/12 anyway. But, assuming we can get a physical and some paperwork completed, your basic mid-year admit should be able to do some physical activity here on campus before school begins if you need him/her to do that. First:
- Have the attached form completed in full and signed by all appropriate parties (mainly your athletic trainer and head coach) before presenting it to the compliance office. We need to know everything that is requested on the form.
- Please be sure to set up a physical (or equivalent) with your athletic trainer well in advance. The "pop-in" physical is NOT popular. And if your new SA is a walk-on, it may be that they will be paying for their own physical.
- The completed form allows the newcomer to use our facilities to work out alone - if you are out of season - or with your team, if you are in-season. Out-of-season work is (as always) purely voluntary.
- Bottom line, no surprises please, and make sure no-one does any athletic activity anywhere on campus until they have been cleared by compliance and athletic training to do so.
