Compliance Question Of The Week
Question 1:
One of my players resides in a house, or apartment, where he/she lives for free - parents are covering it. Is this OK, if we're giving that person a full scholarship?
Answer 1:
THAT particular scenario as it looks on the surface is OK - parents / direct family can obviously pay for a student-athlete's housing and such. The problem usually comes when room-mates move in and expect to live for free / reduced cost. THAT cannot happen. If the "lucky" homeowner doesn't have to pay rent, etc. that does not mean his/her room-mates don't have to pay the full cost of a similar living arrangement. So, bear in mind that no-one gets free or reduced cost housing or other expenses unless it's directly their parents / legal guardians paying. Roomies have to pay their full share. Also, compliance needs to be aware of the "cost-free" living arrangement of ANY student-athlete on your team.
Question 2:
We are truly blessed to be the recipients of some lovely Holiday Cards from some of the sports programs here at IU. But, because I am the Grinch, I ask what can you NOT do with these cards?
Answer 2:
It is assumed that everyone who prints out such Season's Greetings / Happy Holidays cards knows that these cards may NOT be sent to prospects, their parents, their coaches or anyone associated with them. They can be used for IU faculty and staff; boosters (with no recruiting connections); other college coaches; current players and families; friends of the program (who are actually boosters), and other such non-recruiting things.
