Compliance Question Of The Week
Compliance Question Of The Week
Question:
Can I reward my team for going above and beyond the required practice activities and attending every voluntary session for the year?
Answer:
No. Bylaw 17.02.13 makes it pretty clear that when it comes to voluntary activity, no student-athlete may be subjected to a penalty for not attending voluntary workouts nor given any recognition or award for attending all voluntary workouts. In addition, attendance may not be recorded and no student-athlete or other staff member can be asked to report back to the coach any information related to the voluntary session, so you should have no way of knowing who has been attending voluntary workouts. (Unless you are in a safety exception sport and are there for safety and skill instruction).
Question:
As long as all the required signatures are on the CARA form, that is enough to be compliant, right?
Answer:
When you sign your name to the CARA log, you are affirming that the information on the sheet is correct. That means when it gets turned in to us with a discrepancy, our assumption is that a violation occurred. We expect that the student-athlete signers are reviewing their hours before signing also, and that they are in agreement with the hours which are recorded. Please make sure that you are reviewing the CARA hours for accuracy before you sign, as well as discussing the information with the student-athlete signers and answering any questions they might have. As will we.
