Compliance Question Of The Week
Compliance Question Of The Week
Question:
What is priority registration?
Answer:
Indiana University offers our student-athletes the opportunity to register early. This is a privilege and one that we need to take full advantage of. The benefits include having our choice of class times to avoid practice conflicts and to capitalize on the ideal sequencing for different majors. The fact that we register before the regular student body is actually a really good tidbit to share with your PSAs. The registration date to enroll in Fall 2012 classes is Tuesday, April 3rd.
Question:
What academic standard does the NCAA require for a student athlete to be allowed to participate in practice?
Answer:
A student athlete must be enrolled in minimum "full-time program of studies leading to a baccalaureate or equivalent degree" as defined by the institution. At Indiana University, that means 12 credit hours minimum.
14.1.8.1 Requirement for Practice. To be eligible to participate in organized practice sessions, a student athlete shall be enrolled in a minimum full-time program of studies leading to a baccalaureate or equivalent degree as defined by the regulations of the certifying institution.
Question:
Is there an exception for students that have not yet begun class as a freshman?
Answer:
Yes, so long as the student has been accepted by IU for full time enrollment.
Question:
Can a student athlete practice if he/she needs less than 12 hours to finish their degree in their final semester?
Answer:
No Problem, the NCAA has got your back.
14.1.8.1.3 Exception--Final Semester/Quarter.A student-athlete with athletics eligibility remaining may participate in organized practice sessions while enrolled in less than a minimum full-time program of studies, provided the student is enrolled in the final semester or quarter of the baccalaureate program and the institution certifies that the student is carrying (for credit) the courses necessary to complete the degree requirements, as determined by the faculty of the institution.
Question:
What about student athletes practicing at the beginning of the school year (first week) and they have issues settling on their final semester schedule and momentarily are in enrolled in less than 12 hours (which definitely can happen).
Answer:
Once again, the NCAA allows this.
14.1.8.1.5 Exception--Practice during First Week of Class.A student-athlete may practice, but may not compete, during the institution's first five days of classes if the student-athlete is enrolled in less than a minimum full-time program of studies, provided the student is otherwise eligible under all institutional, conference and NCAA requirements.
