Compliance Question Of The Week
Compliance Question Of The Week
Question:
Summertime is all voluntary for student-athletes - I know that. But can I work out with them, or play flag football with them or anything?
Answer:
No - pretty much no, across the board. You should not be working out at the same time as your student-athletes, because your presence makes it Countable Athletically Related Activity (CARA) and CARA is forbidden in summer. And even if you want to participate in a game/sport that you don't coach with your SAs, the answer is still no. Anything that is athletically-related and which includes a sport coach is impermissible in summer. See below and attached for more.
- Safety exception sports (Aquatics, Field events, hurdles, wrestling): sport coaches can be present (if requested by the SA) to conduct safety and skill instruction in summer (or for any voluntary activity). You must not record (or reward) attendance or punish non-attendance.
- In summer only, individual sport coaches (in golf, tennis, track XC) can work with their RETURNING student-athletes (only) if requested by the SA. Incomers/newbies do not get this benefit.
- Make sure that ANY newbie (freshman or transfer) who comes to town before your official start date (or before August 15) is fully registered with compliance and has had a full medical clearance form signed by the athletic training staffs BEFORE doing any physical activity on campus. Form is HERE and Anne will help you with it, as will I.
- NO CARA is permitted as a consequence or punishment for summer indiscretions of student-athletes.
