Compliance Question Of The Week
Compliance Question Of The Week
Question:
What are the conditions of employing a prospective student-athlete while they are still in high school?
Answer:
Timely and important question, because this DOES affect the eligibility of prospective student-athletes. [NCAA Bylaw 13.2.3]
- If the prospective student-athlete is NOT an athletics award winner (i.e. they do not participate on any athletic team) and are NOT recruited by IU, they are permitted to be employed by the athletics department. The employment must be arranged through normal institutional employment procedures and any compensation received must be for work actually performed and they must be paid the going rate.
- If the prospective student-athlete is an athletics award winner OR is recruited by IU, they are NOT permitted to be employed by the athletics department. An athletics award winner includes those prospective student-athletes who do not participate for their high school but may be playing Club, AAU, on the National Team, etc. These prospective student-athletes are able to work at IU if it is for a department outside the athletic department and has not been arranged by anyone on the coaching staff. Such "non-athletics" employment must also be arranged through normal institutional employment procedures and any compensation received must be for work actually performed and they must be paid the going rate.
- As soon as the prospective student-athlete graduates high school, anyone on the IU coaching staff or even a booster may arrange for employment for the prospective student-athlete, regardless of whether they are an athletics award winner or recruited by IU.
- Two year prospects are included in these rules.
Remember, this rule does NOT apply to camps. Prospective student-athletes are not permitted to work at -or volunteer at - IU Camps or Clinics, period. This includes incoming transfers.
