WHAT THEY ARE SAYING ABOUT THE IU NOVICE PROGRAM:
Madison Chaplin
Senior
Major: Exercise Science
Minor: Medical Science, Public Health
“I went to the call-out meeting as a freshman really not even knowing what rowing was, much less what a coxswain was. I can't believe how far I've come that day and how many friends I've made along the way. My college experience would have been so different if I had not joined this team and I honestly wouldn't trade it for anything. The learning curve is huge, you go from knowing next to nothing to almost everything in just a couple of months and you go through that transition with everyone else on the novice team and it just makes you so close as a group. Not only that but the support that athletics gives on the academic side makes it so easy to focus on rowing and know that I am doing well academically. Definitely a choice I'm glad I made and would not change.”
Hanna Henry
Class of 2017
Major: Marketing and Professional Sales
“Prior to college, I was a swimmer and spent the majority of my time in the water. My freshman year at IU I decided to join the novice team, spending my time on top of the water instead. Joining the IU Women's Rowing team has been one of the greatest decisions I've made in college. Yes, I've made many sacrifices to be a part of this team, but in the end there is nothing more satisfying and rewarding than crossing the finish line at the end of a race. I love rowing because it is the epitome of a team sport. I row not only for myself, but for the eight other women sitting in the boat.”
Elizabeth Saunders
Sophomore
Major: Mathematics
"I never pictured myself playing a sport in college, let alone a brand new one at the D1 level. I actually almost skipped the novice rowing callout meeting because I was convinced it would be impossible to juggle both school and a sport. I’m so glad I went though, because now I can’t image what my life would be like without novice rowing here at IU. I’ve made fantastic new friends, learned a new skill, kept up with school, and had a blast doing it all. This is the kind of opportunity that only comes around once, and taking it was a great decision."
Siena Patty
Senior
Major: Outdoor Recreation and Human Ecology
“I played soccer and ran track all through high school, never in a million years would I have imagined myself representing Indiana University as a Division 1 rower. Joining the IU rowing team has not only allowed me to compete at a high level, but it has brought me endless opportunities that I will always be grateful for. Through the novice program I learned confidence, leadership and competitiveness training alongside my amazing teammates and coaches. Competing at the Big Ten Championships as a freshman novice and then NCAA’s as a sophomore all while representing Indiana University is something that I will forever be proud of.”
Maddie Pierce
Junior
Major: Speech and Hearing Science
"When I was in high school, I was worried that I would no longer have a team or a sport to be involved in when I got to college. Luckily, I found the IU Novice Women's Rowing team and my life changed for the better. Novice Rowing taught me more about patience, tenacity and hard-work than any college course ever could, and it gave me an awesome support system in my teammates and coaches. I am proud to be a student-athlete at Indiana University because I know that I am a part of something much bigger than myself."
