Academic Awards
Alpha Beta
• In Greek, alpha and beta are the first and second letters in the alphabet; in astronomy, they are the first and second brightest stars in a constellation. For Indiana University's Department of Intercollegiate Athletics, they represent the A's and B's that demonstrate academic excellence. The Alpha Beta Honorary recognizes those student-athletes who have earned a minimum 3.0 grade point average in their most recent academic semester. We celebrate them for their dedication and for their success in balancing academics and athletics.
Distinguished Scholars
• Big Ten Faculty Representatives established the Distinguished Scholar Award in 2008 to supplement the Academic All-Big Ten program. Similar to the Academic All-Big Ten honor, Distinguished Scholar Award recipients must be letter winners in at least their second academic year at their institution. However, the Distinguished Scholar Award encompasses only students with a minimum GPA of 3.7 or higher for the previous academic year, excluding summer school.
Directors Awards
• Established in the spring of 2011 by Vice President and Director of Intercollegiate Athletics Fred Glass, the Spirit of Indiana Director’s Award is the most prestigious award presented to a student-athlete by the Indiana University Department of Intercollegiate Athletics. Based on nominations submitted by head coaches, this award is given to one male and one female senior student-athlete each year who best personify the eight tenets of “The Spirit of Indiana: 24 Sports. One Team.”
Tichenor Award
• Established in 1984, the Jack D. Tichenor Award honors top male and female athletes who hold the highest individual grade point average (GPA) among all varsity sports.
Chi Alpha Sigma
• Chi Alpha Sigma is an academic fraternity for the National College Athlete Honor Society. Chi Alpha Sigma works with NCAA and NAIA member institutions to recognize outstanding college student-athletes for their successes both on the field of competition and in the classroom.
• Chi Alpha Sigma recognizes college students who receive a varsity letter in their sport while maintaining a 3.4 or higher cumulative GPA throughout their junior and/or senior years.
