INDIANA ROWING
Indiana University Rowing is looking for athletes who are interested in trying a new sport and representing our school while contributing to the goals of our team. Each year, we develop athletes who have never rowed before and teach them how to compete at an elite level as successful student-athletes.
COMMON QUESTIONS AND CONCERNS:
I have never heard of rowing.
That’s okay! NO PREVIOUS EXPERIENCE IS NECESSARY! We are excited to introduce you to the sport and teach you how to row so you have what it takes to compete at a Big Ten Championship. All we ask is that you come in with a positive attitude, give us your best effort, and get one percent better each day.
How do I know if this is for me?
Competitive Athletes that have the ability to develop into strong rowers tend to be:
- Tall (5-9 or taller)
- Competitive
- Coachable
- Team-players
The fall semester is a great time to try rowing out and see if it is something you want to keep doing. If you want to be a part of something bigger than yourself, this is an awesome opportunity to meet people while challenging yourself and learning how to achieve your goals.

What are practices like?
Practices are about building up your aerobic base and improving your fitness. We accomplish this through a combination of things, mostly rowing on the water at Lake Lemon and erging on the erg machine in addition to some running and weightlifting. The goal of our training program is to help you become the best athlete you possibly can be both mentally and physically.
I don’t think I’m tall enough to be a rower.
Try being a coxswain! Coxswains are usually around 5’4” and closer to 110 lbs. They fill important leadership roles on the team as they work with the coaches to run practices, steer the boats, and help the rowers move together and make technical changes.
Are there any costs?
All food and hotel costs when we travel are taken care of and members of the team receive gear to work out in. Athletes do have the opportunity to receive scholarships.
