Cheesebrough previously was an assistant coach at Louisville with current IU head coach Chris Lemonis. In seven years as a coach, Cheesebrough has been part of five NCAA Tournament teams, including back-to-back Louisville squads that reached the College World Series.
In his third season with the program in 2017, the Hoosiers posted a 34-24-2 overall record and a 14-9-1 mark in Big Ten play, as they were selected to the 2017 NCAA Baseball Tournament field. Indiana finished the regular season just one game out of third place in the Big Ten and only two games out of first place in the conference. Four newcomers from the signing class earned all-conference honors as Matt Lloyd was named second team All-Big Ten, while Matt Gorski (first base), Jeremy Houston (shortstop) and Cal Krueger (starting pitcher) each earned Freshman All-Big Ten laurels.
In year two with IU in 2016, Cheesebrough helped lure in a strong freshmen class that played a key role, as Scotty Bradley, Ryan Fineman and Luke Miller each earned spots on the Freshman All-Big Ten team. Miller also went on to Freshman All-American honors from Collegiate Baseball. He tutored Fineman, the team’s starting catcher, who started 50 of Indiana’s 56 games. The freshman was tied for third on the team in hits (51) and doubles (8) and RBI (25). His 23 stolen bases against were the third fewest amongst Big Ten starting catchers.
In his first season with the Hoosiers, the program reached its third-straight NCAA Regional, as Indiana went 12-5 vs. ranked opponents, including five Top 15 wins. Cheesebrough worked with a Hoosier offense that ranked in the top five in the Big Ten in eight statistical categories. Working with the team’s catchers, he tutored Brad Hartong, who led the Big Ten in runners caught stealing (21), while hitting .303 with 70 hits and 13 doubles. Hartong went on to being drafted by the Minnesota Twins in the 2015 MLB Draft.
A member of the Louisville baseball team in 2008 and 2009, Cheesebrough returned to the program prior to 2012 after serving one season as the volunteer assistant at the University of Pittsburgh in 2011. He helped Louisville notch back-to-back College World Series appearances in 2013 and 2014, after the Cardinals reached the NCAA Tournament in his first season in 2012.
In each of his three seasons on the Louisville coaching staff, Cheesebrough worked with the Cardinals' catchers, including Kyle Gibson, who was named to the 2012 NCAA Tucson Regional All-Tournament Team after hitting .417 with two doubles in four games.
In his one season at Pitt in 2011, Cheesebrough worked with catcher Kevan Smith, who earned First Team All-BIG EAST honors while hitting .397 with 11 home runs and 56 RBI, and Anthony Defabio, a Third Team All-BIG EAST designated hitter who finished with a .337 average.
During his two seasons as a player at Louisville, Cheesebrough played in 32 games with 18 starts as the Cardinals won back-to-back BIG EAST Tournament titles, won one BIG EAST regular-season title, made two NCAA Regional appearances and advanced to an NCAA Super Regional.
After his playing career ended, the native of Rowlett, Texas, completed his degree in education in 2010 while working as a student assistant as U of L set a school record with 50 wins, won a second straight BIG EAST regular season title and earned No. 7 national seed in the NCAA Championship.
