Indiana Field Hockey head coach Amanda Janney announced the addition of assistant coach Kayla May to her staff on February 25, 2016. May joins Indiana after serving the past three seasons as the assistant coach and recruiting coordinator at Siena College.
"Kayla knows how to win Championships and she has shown that in her successful as a coach and as a player," Janney said of the Hoosiers' newest addition. "I was impressed with her focus on fitness and her ability to teach and motivate young players. We are building a culture of excellence and she will be a great role model and mentor for our student-athletes."
May brings experience with recruiting, video analysis, and coaching that will strengthen the field hockey staff. Her experience at the Division-I level, both as a coach and a player, will bolster the Hoosiers' performance in the Big Ten Conference.
"I am very excited for this amazing opportunity," May said. "I look forward to working with and becoming a part of the Hoosier family."
In May's final season with Siena, the Saints posted their highest win total since the 2009 season while splitting their conference schedule. One of May's freshmen twice earned the MAAC's Rookie of the Week award.
In addition to her field hockey duties, May served as a strength and conditioning assistant for Siena's 20 athletic programs.
Most recently, May has pursued the highest level of playing, attending the USA National Field Hockey Team tryouts in January 2015. She also trained with the USFHA High Performance Midwest team for three years in 2007, 2008, and 2009. May has stayed active by playing for adult club teams, participating in the USA National Hockey Festival in 2013 and 2014 and the USFHA National Indoor tournament in 2013.
Prior to her stint at Siena College, May was the strength and conditioning coach for the University at Albany. While there, she devised and supervised sports performance activities for Albany's 19 athletic programs. May spent the majority of her time at Albany working with the field hockey, golf, women's lacrosse, softball, and track & field teams. She also assisted with football, baseball, and men's lacrosse.
May earned a pair of bachelor's degrees in Physical Education and Exercise Science, with a minor in Health, from the University of Louisville in 2009. While there, May was a standout player for the Cardinals' field hockey team.
May played in 67 games over her four-year intercollegiate athletics career, making 38 starts in her junior and senior seasons. She tallied 21 goals and 49 points while leading the Cardinals in game-winning goals her senior year.
In May's time at Louisville, the Cardinals won three Big East regular season titles (2006, 2007, 2008) and made the NCAA Sweet 16 in 2008.
In 2006, Louisville won the Big East regular season title in just their second year with the conference. In 2007, the Cardinals repeated as regular season champions with signature wins over Syracuse, No. 19 Virginia, and No. 20 Villanova.
The Cardinals saw a return to the NCAA Tournament in 2008 after winning their third consecutive Big East regular season crown. That year, Louisville tallied six wins against nationally ranked opponents, including a 3-1 win over No. 4 Connecticut. The Cardinals reached the Sweet 16 before falling to No. 6 Iowa in East Lansing.
May also excelled in the classroom while at Louisville. She picked up three NFHCA National Academic Squad selections in 2007, 2008, and 2009.
