Indiana head coach Amanda Janney Misselhorn announced that Wilhelmus “Pim” van Paassen was named an assistant coach for Indiana’s field hockey team on March 1, 2018. van Paassen assumes the role of Indiana’s goalkeeper specialist in addition to his assistant coaching duties.
For nearly a decade, van Paassen has instructed field hockey players of all ages in the United States and Europe. Prior to joining the Hoosiers’ coaching staff, van Paassen served as a guest goalie coach for the United States Women’s National team in the 2017 season, working closely with current national team goalkeeper Lauren Blazing.
van Paassen was also an assistant coach for Princeton Day School (N.J.) and a coach at New Jersey’s High Performance Academy during the 2017 season. During his time in the Garden State, van Paassen also instructed youth players at the Princeton Field Hockey Club and the USA Futures program in the New Jersey/Pennsylvania region.
Adding a goalkeeper specialist to Janney Misselhorn’s coaching staff does more than improve the last line of defense, as the mind of a goalkeeper can do wonders to improve the attacking approach of forward lines as they anticipate their opponents between the pipes. van Paassen provided such a contribution in his time at Northwestern University during the 2016 season.
With the Wildcats, van Paassen helped their starting goalkeeper, Lindsay von der Luft, hold a .750 save percentage with four shutouts and worked with a forward line that averaged 3.6 goals per game.
In the years prior to joining Northwestern’s staff, van Paassen served as an assistant and goalie coach at Total Dutch Field Hockey in Somerset, New Jersey, and rose through the ranks as a teacher and field hockey coach at the British School of the Netherlands. van Paassen also made appearances at World Camp USA and the European Sportways Goalie Camps in Belgium, the Netherlands, Ireland, and Spain.
van Paassen’s playing experience began in the 2000s with Mixed Hockey Club Zoetermeer in Zoetermeer, Netherlands. He began as a goalkeeper at age 13 and transitioned into coaching by the time he was 15. With MHC Zoetermeer, van Paassen coached at the U-16 (girls) and U-19 (boys) levels.
Pim van Paassen earned a Bachelor’s Degree of Physical Education, with a minor in Sports Coaching, from The Hague University for Physical Education in 2013.
