In his third season with the program, Bob Bostad continues to mold the offensive line into one of the best units in the Big Ten.
The lone coach retained by Curt Cignetti upon his arrival in spring 2024, Bostad owns 27 years of experience coaching the offensive line at the collegiate and professional levels.
In two seasons, Bostad has left his imprint on the offensive line. The Hoosiers have two of its top five highest graded offensive line performances since 2014 under his tutelage. The 2024 edition owns the program’s second-highest graded season since 2015 – an offensive line that featured four future NFL starters.
A semifinalist for the Joe Moore Award for the top offensive line in college football, the 2024 group paved the way for a program-record-tying 37 rushing touchdowns and protected quarterback Kurtis Rourke to a single-season program-best 29 touchdown passes. Its success up front helped IU earn a spot in the College Football Playoff, led to a program-record 70 touchdowns scored (70) and paved the way for the first running back duo to reach double-digit touchdowns (Ty Son Lawton, 11; Justice Ellison, 10) in the same season in program history.
In Weeks 9-10, his pupils posted back-to-back Big Ten games without allowing a sack to mark the first time since 2001 that IU hasn't surrendered a sack in consecutive conference
games. The group also stood up for a program-best 701 yards of total offense versus Western Illinois and helped IU produce five games with 500-plus yards of total offense.
In his first season at Indiana, Bostad helped the offensive line to its best season grade since 2017 according to Pro Football Focus and allowed just 16 sacks on the season after 26 during the 2022 season.
Over his two seasons, both of his centers have earned all-conference honors. Mike Katic was a third-team All-Big Ten pick in 2024 and Zach Carpenter and earned honorable mention All-Big Ten in 2023.
He spent two separate stints at the University of Wisconsin (2006-11, 17-21). During his initial run, the Badgers staked claim to a pair of Big Ten titles. Bostad directly coached 11 first-team All-Americans over his 11 total years with the Badgers.
In 2017, Bostad returned to Wisconsin and worked with the defense for the first time, where he tutored first-team All-Americans and Butkus Award finalists in T.J. Edwards (2017) and Leo Chenal (2021). Edwards, Chenal, Jack Cichy, Ryan Connelly, Chris Orr, and Jack Sanborn each moved on to play linebacker in the NFL.
A move back to the offensive line in 2022 netted a pair of NFL pupils. Center Joe Tippmann was selected in the second round of the 2023 NFL Draft by the New York Jets, and guard Tyler Beach signed as a free agent with the Houston Texans.
Bostad oversaw the offensive line from 2008-11 after two campaigns as tight ends coach (2006-07). He mentored nine NFL draft picks, including three first-rounders in Gabe Carimi (2010 Outland Trophy winner), Kevin Zeitler, and Travis Frederick. Eight of his pupils went on to earn first-team All-America honors.
Frederick became the NFL’s highest-paid center in 2016, while Zeitler signed the largest contract by a guard in NFL history in 2017, the same year another of Bostad’s players, Rick Wagner, became the league’s highest-paid right tackle.
UW captured back-to-back Big Ten titles behind an offense that averaged 41.5 points in 2010 and 44.1 points in 2011. Bostad's line helped pave the way for running back and 2011 Heisman Trophy finalist Montee Ball to rush for 1,923 yards and match Barry Sanders' single-season record with 39 touchdowns.
Quarterback Russell Wilson set an FBS record for passing efficiency (191.8) and threw for 3,175 yards and 33 TDs. The Badgers averaged at least 200 rushing yards in each of Bostad’s five seasons as run game coordinator, and they topped the conference in rushing on three occasions.
Tight ends Owen Daniels, Travis Beckum, and Garrett Graham were each NFL draft picks under Bostad. Beckum was a first-team All-American and a 2007 John Mackey Award finalist. He set both UW’s single-season and career records for receptions and receiving yards by a tight end. Daniels was a two-time Pro Bowl selection with Houston and won a Super Bowl with Denver.
He spent four seasons on NFL staffs as an offensive line coach, first in Tampa Bay (2012-13) and then with Tennessee (2014-15). He developed Pro Bowl tackle Taylor Lewan, who was named to the Pro Football Writers Association All-Rookie Team in 2014.
Bostad mentored the most all-conference offensive linemen in the Mountain West Conference during his seven-year stint at the University of New Mexico (1999-2005). Ryan Cook (Vikings; 2nd round), Claude Terrell (Rams; 4th round), Terrance Pennington (Bills; 7th round), and Robert Turner (Jets; free agent) each reached the NFL.
Tackle David Loverne was taken in the third round of the NFL Draft by the New York Jets under Bostad’s stewardship at San Jose State University (1997-98).
He graduated from UW-Stevens Point in 1989 with a degree in physical education. He was a four-year starter at linebacker for the Pointers and earned all-conference each year.
A native of Pardeeville, Wisconsin, Bostad has three daughters, Rachel, Bryn, and Annika; and one son, John.
