• Former Indiana player and assistant coach Mark Hagen returned to the Hoosiers as assistant defensive coordinator and defensive line coach on Feb. 10, 2016. He was named co-defensive coordinator on Aug. 2, 2018.
• Worked with IU in 2011 and 2012 before he moved on to Texas A&M from 2013-15.
• Linemen held four of the top five spots on the team in sacks and three of the top five in tackles for loss, while seven recorded sacks and 10 collected TFLs in 2018.
• In 2017, Indiana shared 11th nationally (T-4th in the Big Ten) with 3.0 sacks per game and sat 20th (3rd) with 7.3 tackles for loss.
• The previous year the Hoosiers were 31st in the country (5th in the Big Ten) with 2.5 sacks each outing and 20th (3rd) with 7.5 TFLs.
• IU was one of three Big Ten teams (Michigan and Penn State) to rank in the league’s top five in sacks and tackles for loss per game in both 2016 and 2017.
• Three linemen have been recognized by the conference over the last three seasons. Robert McCray III (2017), a free-agent signing of the Kansas City Chiefs, and Ralph Green III (2016) each collected honorable-mention All-B1G, while Jerome Johnson (2017) claimed an honorable-mention spot on the BTN.com All-Freshman team.
• The Indiana defense limited its opponents to 35.3 fewer rushing yards per game in 2016.
• A Carmel, Ind., native, Hagen was a four-year letterwinner (1987, 89-91), two-time, second-team All-Big Ten selection, three-time Academic All-Big Ten winner, 1992 Big Ten Medal of Honor recipient and a captain at linebacker.
• Graduate and administrative assistant with the Hoosiers from 1992-95. Hagen was a part of five bowl games, including the 1991 Copper Bowl, where he was named the bowl’s Most Valuable Defensive Player.
• Owns 27 years of coaching experience, including 23 in the Big Ten and the SEC, and has coached in 12 bowl games.
• Served as the Indiana defensive tackles coach and special teams coordinator in 2011-12, and added recruiting coordinator duties in 2012.
• Coached 25 players who have moved on to the NFL, including IU defensive linemen McCray, Larry Black Jr. and Adam Replogle, kicker Mitch Ewald, return specialist Shane Wynn and long snapper Matt Dooley.
• In addition to his success on the field, Rivals.com has twice recognized Hagen as one of the top recruiters in the country.
• At A&M, he was the Aggies defensive coordinator in their 2014 AutoZone Liberty Bowl victory over West Virginia. He coached the linebackers in 2013 and 2014, and the defensive tackles in 2015.
• Oversaw the Purdue University linebackers in 2006-07 and 2009-10, after he worked with the defensive tackles from 2000-05 and again in 2008. He served as special teams coordinator from 2003-08 and as assistant head coach under Joe Tiller from 2005-08.
• From 2000-04, the Boilermakers ranked third, third, fourth, third and second in the Big Ten in rushing defense. They were 46th in the nation in 2000, 34th in 2001, 23rd in 2002, 10th in 2003 and 14th in 2004.
• Spent four years at Northern Illinois University from 1996-99. He coached the defensive tackles and also managed camps and clinics.
• As a player, Hagen led the team in tackles three-straight years from 1989-91, and he was the team’s Balfour Award recipient in 1991 for bringing distinction and honor to the university. He is tied for fifth in Hoosiers history with 336 career tackles.
• A member of Carmel High School’s 1986 state championship team.
• Graduated from Indiana with a B.S. in marketing in 1991. He earned an M.S. in sport marketing and management from Indiana in 1995.
• Mark and his wife, Denise, have four daughters, Abby (22), Emma (18), Ellie (15) and Ava (10).
