Indianapolis native Pat Kuntz begins the second season of his second stint at Indiana and fourth year as a part of a Curt Cignetti staff in 2025.
Kuntz has tutored a double-digit sack producer in two of the last three seasons and has seen at least one pass rusher reach 10.0 tackles for loss for three-straight campaigns.
In his first season in Bloomington, the defensive line was a major part of the nation’s No. 1 rushing defense on a College Football Playoff qualifier. James Carpenter and CJ West each earned honorable mention All-Big Ten, with Carpenter second on the team in sacks (6.0) and tackles for loss (11.5). West earned an invitation to the NFL Combine after 7.5 tackles for loss and 2.0 sacks.
The 247sports All-Assistant Team pick as the defensive line coach, his defensive front created havoc during his two seasons at James Madison (2022-23). All-American Isaac Ukwu led a group of seven All-Sun Belt picks and his 2023 defensive line featured two first-team and two second-team All-SBC picks which included 2023 Sun Belt Defensive Player of the Year Jalen Green.
The tandem of Green (16.5) and Jamaree Kromah (11.0) became just the second James Madison duo to log double-digit sack totals in the same season during the 2023 campaign. Green’s 16.5 sacks were the most by an FBS defender in the 2023 regular season despite missing the final three games due to injury.
The Dukes success at the point of attack showed during its first two seasons at the FBS level. A nation’s best rushing defense (61.5 ypg) was bolstered by an FBS-best 9.1 tackles for loss per game in 2023. In 2022, JMU sat No. 2 in both categories at 79.5 rushing yards allowed per game and 8.6 tackles for loss.
Kuntz came to JMU following a three-year stay at VMI (2019-21), where he coached the defensive line and served as defensive run game coordinator.
He coached four players in his position group to All-Southern Conference accolades and helped the Keydets to the FCS Playoff for the first time in program history in 2021. The 2021 squad posted a 6-2 record during the spring season and won the SoCon title for the first time since 1977.
Kuntz was a graduate assistant at Indiana (2016-17) for two seasons and worked with the defensive line.
He began his coaching career as the defensive line coach at his high school alma mater, Roncalli High School in Indianapolis (2010-13), and was promoted to defensive coordinator (2014-15) his final two seasons on staff.
Kuntz was a four-year letterwinner at Notre Dame (2005-08) and started for three seasons at nose guard. He was named Lineman of the Year in 2007 and 2008 and led the country in pass breakups by a defensive lineman in 2007.
He graduated from Notre Dame in 2009 with a bachelor’s degree in sociology and signed as an undrafted free agent with the Indianapolis Colts.
Kuntz is married to the former Amber Bradley. The couple has two sons, Axel and Harlow.
