Coaching Record at Indiana: 662-239 (.735) overall, 353-151 (.700) Big Ten
From the plaid jacket to the famed red sweater the name Bob Knight became synonymous with Indiana University basketball and in his 29 seasons no one could deny him that distinction. “The General” led the Hoosiers to three national championships, 11 Big Ten championships and one National Invitation Tournament title. The greatest accomplishment in the Bob Knight era was the 1975-76 National Championship run where the Hoosiers began the year as the Associated Press’ preseason number one team and carried that ranking all the way through the season to Knight’s first and the school’s third NCAA Championship. That squad was also the last team to finish the season perfect with a 32-0 overall record and an 18-0 Big Ten mark. Knight’s second title came during the 1980-81 season when Isiah Thomas led the squad to the NCAA title over the North Carolina Tar Heels. The squad’s final championship of the Knight era came in the 1986-87 season when Keith Smart hit the game-winning shot to defeat Syracuse in the national title game. Knight’s career saw numerous achievements by both the coach himself and his players. He was awarded with National Coach-of-the-Year honors on four occasions in 1975, 76, 87 and 1989. He ranks sixth on the all-time coaches list for victories and is the 30th winningest coach of all-time. Under Knight’s leadership, Calbert Cheaney became the all-time leading scorer in Big Ten history. He also coached nine Big Ten MVPs and had a total of 27 All-Americans play in Assembly Hall. Knight had an overall Indiana record of 662-239 and a Big Ten Conference mark of 353-151. He was inducted into the IU Athletic Hall of Fame in 2009.
