An undefeated October and five-game conference winning streak to end the regular season lifted Indiana to their second consecutive Big Ten Championship, sharing the league title with Ohio State. IU earned the No. 14 national seed and returned to the NCAA Tournament Round of 16 for the 10th consecutive season after a 2-1 comeback victory over Akron at Armstrong Stadium. The Hoosiers would fall in their Sweet 16 road match to No. 3 national seed Denver, who would eventually make the NCAA College Cup.
Indiana won the Big Ten Championship Double despite a 3-3-4 start to the campaign, sharing the regular season title with Penn State before defeating the Nittany Lions in the tournament final, 1-0, in front of a packed house at Bill Armstrong Stadium. The Hoosiers won 12 of their last 14 matches to reach the Elite Eight and finish their season a penalty shootout away from the NCAA College Cup and with a 15-4-5 record. During its NCAA Tournament run, IU took care of Lipscomb, 2-1, in the first round before road wins at No. 10 national seed Wake Forest (3-2) and No. 7 national seed Virginia (1-0).
In his first season on staff, Indiana returned to the NCAA College Cup and national title match. Earning the No. 13 national seed, the Hoosiers stormed through the NCAA Tournament with shutout victories against Saint Louis, Marshall, UNC Greensboro and Pitt in the national semifinal. IU finished No. 2 nationally with a 14-5-6 overall record and an 8-4-1 mark against ranked opponents.
Thompson was a three-time All-American at IU from 2013-16, recording 18 goals, 19 assists and 55 points. In 2017, he was Minnesota United’s fourth-round selection in the MLS SuperDraft and went on to play for USL side Indy Eleven for one season. His brother, Tommy Thompson, played alongside him in 2013 and now plays for the San Jose Earthquakes of Major League Soccer. Tanner’s father, Gregg Thompson, led the Hoosiers to their first NCAA Title in 1982, scoring both goals in the final, and is a member of the IU Athletics Hall of Fame.
