Jake Combs was named as the team's volunteer assistant coach after spending the previous four years as a student assistant.
In 2019, Combs and the Indiana coaching staff led the team to its best start in program history (14-0), the best record since 2011 (36-21) and the best non-conference mark since 1986 (26-8). Thanks to the hot start, Indiana earned a spot in the USA Today/NFCA Coaches Poll, the first ranking for the team since 1996. IU would spend six straight weeks ranked, picking up wins against two top-10 teams in No. 6 Georgia (Feb. 10) and at No. 10 LSU (March 1), the first time that has been done at Indiana.
Combs' primary duties include day-to-day operations such as coordinating camps and clinics, assisting with practice planning and game day preparation, throwing batting practice, assisting with team equipment, coordinating travel and scouting reports. Combs joined the Indiana Softball program in Summer 2014 as a student assistant during his freshman year at Indiana. Along with his experience with the Hoosiers, Combs has worked in travelball with Indiana Magic Gold and Indiana Dreams. Combs, a native of Carmel, Ind., graduated from Indiana in May 2018 with a degree in Sport Marketing and Management. His younger sister, Karly, is a sophomore on the team.
