Andrew Poore completed his ninth year assistant coach with the Hoosiers in 2023 after a successful career as a student-athlete and volunteer coach for the program. He earned seven All-America honors and two Big Ten Championships during his time at IU. Poore, a 2012 Indiana University graduate, is the recruiting coordinator and assists with distance runners.
Indiana (2014-Present)
The 2024 cross country season saw three USTFCCCA All-Region performers, two on the men’s side in Abe Eckman (12th) and Skylar Stidam (22nd) with Mariah Wehrle (19th) leading the women’s squad.
In 2023, the Hoosiers finished the season with an eighth (men) and 11th (women) place finishes at the Big Ten Championships. Both teams improved at the 2023 NCAA Great Lakes Regional finishing seventh (men) and 10th (women).
Skylar Stidam had great development in his final track and field season. He set the 10,000-meter school record with a time of 28:32.41, that was previously set by coach Poore in 2011. Stidam also won the Big Ten Outdoor 5,000-meter title and finished fourth in the 10k at the Big Ten conference championships.
Stidam later qualified for his first NCAA Championships after finishing fifth at the NCAA East Prelims in the 10,000 meters. He earned USTFCCCA Honorable Mention honors after finishing 23rd at the NCAA Outdoor Championships.
The 2023 campaign saw a handful of breakout runners including first-year athlete Claire Overfelt. The Whiteland, Ind. native, who started as IU as a club runner, ran 34:00.24 in the 10,000 meters under the guidance of Poore, moving into ninth in program history. Alyssa Skorge ran 10:24.04 in the 3000-meter steeplechase at the Penn Relays to move up to eighth in the program's all-time list. Freshman Katelyn Winton finished fifth for IU in Cross Country in 2022 before making the Big Ten final indoors in the mile.
The fall of 2021 saw the Hoosiers place top-5 in both the men's and women's competitions at the Big Ten Cross Country Championships. In the spring of 2021, Indiana saw its cross country squads place second and fourth at the Big Ten Championships. Bailey Hertenstein was the runner-up in the women’s race and earned All-Big Ten First Team honors. Hertenstein also went on to capture her second All-American accolade with her 28th place finish at the NCAA Championships.
Ben Veatch pulled the distance double for the Hoosiers and won gold in the 3000 meters and 5000 meters at the Big Ten Indoor Championships. Eight middle distance and distance student-athletes were also point scorers for Indiana at indoor conference championships. Veatch went on be a Second Team All-American in the 5000m. Kelsey Harris also garnered Second Team All-American honors in the 1500 meters at NCAA Championships. Poore aided Hertenstein (outdoor 5000 meters), Kelsey Harris (1500 meters), Matthew Schadler (1000 meters), and Veatch (outdoor 5000 meters) to new school records.
In 2019 and for second-straight season, both the men's and women's squads earned at-large bids to the NCAA Championships. Ben Veatch earned an auto-individual bid to NCAAs with his fourth place finish at the NCAA Great Lakes Regional. The NCAA Championships brought in a 13th place finish for the men, including All-America status for Kyle Mau. The women placed 19th with Bailey Hertenstein racing to All-American. Helmer also helped coached both teams to second on the men's side and fourth on the women's side at Big Ten Championships.
Indiana won the men's Big Ten Championship. Distance runner Bailey Hertenstein broke out and earned a Big Ten Championships in the 3000 meters. The men's DMR squad earned gold at Big Ten Championships. Distance event point scorers included Matthew Schadler, Teddy Browning and Dustin Horter in the mile. Arjun Jha, Kyle Mau, and Ben Veatch scored in both the 3000 meters and 5000 meters. In the middle-distance events, Cooper Williams and Adam Wallace placed fourth and seventh in the 800 meters, respectively. On the women's side, Joely Pinkston (800 meters), Grace Walther (mile), and the DMR team all scored for the Hoosiers.
2018 provided to be a pivotal year for the cross-country program at Indiana. Both teams earned at-large bids to the NCAA Championships after both placing fifth at the Great Lakes Regional. For the first time in program history both squads earned top-20 finishes at the championships as the women’s placed 17th and the men finished in 18th. Individually, Kyle Mau earned an automatic bid to the championships by placing fourth at regionals. Maggie Allen earned All-America honors for her 36th place effort at NCAAs.
At the Big Ten Indoor Championships Ben Veatch walked away as a conference champion in the 3000 meters. Both the men and women finished in second place overall. Indoor NCAA Championships saw five individuals and two relay teams earn All-America accolades. The individuals were Kelsey Harris (800 meters), Kyle Mau (mile and 3000 meters), Cooper Williams (800 meters), and Ben Veatch (5000 meters). Both DMR squads picked up All-America credit as well. During Big Ten Outdoor Championships three individuals grabbed Big Ten titles including Maggie Allen (10,000 meters), Cooper Williams (800 meters), and Ben Veatch (5000 meters). As a team, both the men and women took second place. Also during the outdoor season, During the outdoor season, Daniel Michalski (steeplechase) and Cooper Williams (800 meters) earned All-American status
During the 2017 season Katherine Receveur emerged victorious at the Big Ten Championships by capturing gold. She was also named Big Ten Cross Country Athlete of the Year. At NCAA Championships the women’s squad placed 24th while Receveur led the Hoosiers with a 20th place finish for All-American honors. Ben Veatch competed individually at the championships.
The indoor season brought home Track Athlete of the Big Ten Championships in Katherine Receveur along with four individual Big Ten titles. Daniel Kuhn (600 meters), Kyle Mau (mile), Receveur (3000 meters and 5000 meters). There were eleven All-American accolades presented to the Hoosiers. Kelsey Harris (800 meters), Daniel Kuhn (800 meters), Kyle Mau (DMR and 3000 meters), and the men’s and women’s DMR squad collected honors at NCAA Championships. During outdoor, Receveur earned gold in the 5000 meters at Big Ten Championships. Two Hoosiers took All-American honors at outdoor championships, Maggie Allen (10,000 meters) and Ben Veatch (5000 meters).
The 2016 season was a resurgent year for the Hoosiers. The men’s cross country team finished third at the Big Ten Championships and were snubbed from a spot in the NCAA Championships. However, Matt Schwartzer and Jason Crist both ran as individuals, the latter taking home All-American honors. Ben Veatch was named the Big Ten Freshman of the Year. Katherine Receveur broke onto the scene, earning All-Big Ten and All-American distinctions with an 11th place finish.
The Hoosiers won the 2017 Men's Big Ten Indoor Championships. Distance event winners included Kuhn (600 meters), the distance medley relay and Katherine Receveur (5000m) with a school record mark of 15:28.99. The men’s DMR team of Joe Murphy, Markevious Roach, Daniel Kuhn and Kyle Mau finished fifth at the NCAA Championships. Kuhn finished sixth individually in the 800 meters and Receveur was also sixth in the 3000 meters. During the outdoor season Katherine Receveur finished third in the 5000 meters at the NCAA Championships, taking First-Team All-American honors. Jason Crist closed out his senior year with Honorable Mention distinctions in the men’s 5000 meters.
The 2015-16 season saw Daniel Kuhn (600 meters) win a Big Ten Championship and finish as an All-American in the outdoor season.
