Ed Beathea was officially named Director of Track and Field and Cross Country on July 1st, 2023. Prior to taking over the program, he spent 19 seasons as either an assistant or associate coach working directly with the sprints, hurdles and relays. He will continue his current coaching responsibilities while overseeing the entirety of IU's Track and Field and Cross Country programs.
Indiana (2014-Present)
In his first season as head coach, five school record were broken with the women’s indoor 300 and indoor and outdoor 400 meters (Kenisha Phillips), women’s indoor 4x400 relay (Kristina Vincic, Morgan Snow, Maddie Russin, Kenisha Phillips), indoor men’s mile (Camden Marshall) and the outdoor 10,000 meters (Skylar Stidam).
A trio of Hoosiers earned All-First Team Big Ten after earning Big Ten Titles. Nathan Stone (Pole Vault) and Camden Marshall (800m) collected Indoor titles while Skylar Stidam (5,000m) became a Big Ten Outdoor Champion in the distance event.
Indiana also added three silver medals in their respective events with Marshall (800m), Antonio Laidler (100m) and Kenisha Phillips (400m). Sean Mockler earned bronze in the hammer throw.
Indiana earned 16 entries to the NCAA East Prelims and saw a combined seven entries combined between the 2024 Indoor and Outdoor NCAA Track and Field Championships.
At the Indoor National Championships, the Hoosiers earned First Team All-American honors in the Distance Medley Relay with a sixth-place finish. Phillips and pole vaulter Jessica Mercier also earned First Team All-American status with eighth place finishes in their events.
Sean Mockler (Hammer Throw) and Marshall (800m) earned Second Team All-America honors at the Outdoor Championships. Tyler Carrel and Skylar Stidam earned USTFCCCA Honorable Mention.
Laidler competed in the first round of the 100-meter dash at the U.S. Olympic Track and Field Trials where he finished 31st with a time of 10.36. Marshall also earned an opportunity to run with the nation’s best. He advanced to the second-round in the 800 meters.
At the conclusion of the season, two Hoosiers were named CSC Academic All-Americans, 14 student-athletes and both men’s and women’s track and field teams earned USTFCCCA All-Academic Honors.
Indiana had 19 Academic All-Big Ten honorees during the cross-country season and 43 honorees on the track and field team.
Antonio Laidler became Beathea's latest sprinter to break onto the scene for the Hoosiers with a tremendous 2023 campaign. He finished as the Big Ten runner-up in the 60 meters indoors while scoring in four individual races and the 4x100 relay at Big Ten Championship meets this season.
Laidler broke the program record in the 100 meters (10.19) at the NCAA East Prelims. He is third in school history in the 60 meters (6.68) and ran second leg on the fifth quartet at IU to break 40 seconds (39.99) in the 4x100-meter relay.
During the 2022 season Rikkoi Brathwaite continued his outstanding form, winning gold at the Big Ten Indoor Championships (60 meters) before finishing as the national runner-up in the same event at the NCAA Indoor Championships. He ran a new school record and Big Ten record of 6.52 seconds. His time is also tied for 19th in NCAA history. He was second at the Big Ten Outdoor Championships in the 100 meters and also ran leadoff leg for IU's 4x100 relay team which was third in the Big Ten.
It was another year of success for the sprints squad in 2021. Rikkoi Brathwaite had a breakout year where he was crowned Big Ten Indoor Champion in the 60 meters. His time of 6.55 was a new school record and matched the Big Ten record. Brathwaite earned bronze at the NCAA Indoor Championships and earned First Team All-American honors. At the conclusion of the indoor campaign, Brathwaite was named the Big Ten Track Athlete of the Year.
Shaton Vaughn ran the 400-meter leg of the distance medley relay team that placed third and captured first All-American accolades. Vaughn also tallied two points in the 400-meter hurdles and 4x100 relay for the Hoosiers at theconference championships. During the outdoor campaign, Natalie Price set the program record in the 400 meters with a time of 52.21. Beathea sent four members of the sprint squad and one relay to NCAA East Prelims to end the season.
The 2019-20 season brought more success for the sprinters as Rikkoi Brathwaite (60 meters) and Natalie Price (500 meters) both broke school records in the first meet of the season. Brathwaite was also the runner-up in the 60 meterws at Big Ten Indoor Championships. Shaton Vaughn had a strong season to score at Big Ten Championships and was the 400-meter leg on the Big Ten championship-winning DMR squad. Megan Grabowski had podium finishes in the 60 meters and 200 meters while freshman standout Alyssa Robinson competed in her first Big Ten Championship race and placed fifth in the 200 meters.
In the 2018-19 season, Natalie Price and Rikkoi Brathwaite both had breakout years. They both earned a trip to the NCAA Regionals during the outdoor season. He also coached Zubin Muncherji during the indoor campaign who was a part of the All-American DMR squad that placed fourth at NCAA Indoor Championships.
During the 2017-18 season, Beathea coached William Session to a qualifying spot at NCAA Championships in the 110-meter hurdles. Session also earned a spot on the All-Big Ten Second Team squad.
Beathea’s third season at Indiana, the 2016-17 season, saw him mentor a trio of All-Americans. Markevious Roach and Taylor Williams both nabbed All-America honors in the Distance Medley Relay during the indoor season. Freshman William Session secured Honorable Mention accolades in the 110-meter hurdles.
Ohio State (2006-14)
Prior to returning to Indiana University, Beathea spent seven seasons at Ohio State University. Beathea spent six seasons as an assistant coach before taking over the head coaching job in 2013. In his six years as an assistant in Columbus he earned the 2010 and 2011 Great Lakes Assistant Coach of the Year. Beathea was in charge of the sprinters and hurdlers, as well as athletes competing in the horizontal jumps. He mentored Buckeye athletes in his event areas to 10 individual Big Ten titles while also building the Buckeye 4x400-meter relay team into a Midwestern juggernaut that won five Big Ten titles in a row from 2008-2010 and qualified for multiple NCAA championship appearances.
In his first full season as head coach of the program, Beathea led the Buckeyes to a 21st-place finish at the 2013 NCAA outdoor championships, their best finish since 2004. Under his guidance OSU sent 11 student-athletes to the NCAA Outdoor Championships, which was the most for the team in over 15 years.
Indiana (1996-2006)
Before Ohio State, coach Beathea spent 10 seasons as an assistant coach at IU. In his decade with the Hoosiers he coached 32 Big Ten sprint and hurdle champions, 28 All-Americans and two NCAA runner-ups. He gained national attention for his work with sprinters David Neville - a bronze medalist at the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games - and Rachelle (Boone) Smith, the 2006 USA outdoor champion in the 200-meter dash, while also building his reputation as an excellent relay coach. Under his leadership, the women's sprint relay squad made conference history by becoming the first Big Ten relay team to win the league title and earn All-America recognition for four consecutive years (2001-05).
Northern Arizona (1993-95)
Coach Beathea spent two years at Northern Arizona University before to his arrival at Indiana, assisting with the sprinters, horizontal jumpers and men's and women's cross country squads. His time in Flagstaff came on the heels of a successful collegiate career at Ball State, where he holds school records in the 400-meter dash (indoor) and 4x400-meter relay.
Personal
Beathea graduated with a bachelor's degree from BSU in 1992 and earned his master's in sports administration while serving as a graduate assistant for the Cardinals in 1994.
A native of Elkhart, Ind., Ed and his wife, Kim, have two daughters, Sarah and Abby.
