Mike Erb completed his ninth year coaching the jumps and women’s multi-event groups for Indiana in the 2023 season. To date he’s coached 59 Big Ten finalists and 10 Big Ten champions along with eight USTFCCCA All-Americans.
Indiana (2014-Present)
Since joining Indiana, Erb has been recognized as one of the region’s premier assistant coaches, having been named the Great Lakes Region Assistant Coach of the Year in 2017, when the Hoosiers won the Big Ten Men’s Indoor Team Championship. Overall, Erb’s athletes at Indiana have added 36 performances to the school’s all-time top-10 lists. All-American Leah Moran holds the school's indoor and outdoor triple jump records set in 2020 and 2021 respectively. Big Ten Champion and three-time All-American Paola Fernandez-Sola holds the school's outdoor long jump record.
In the 2024 season, Paola Fernandez-Sola finished fifth in the long jump with a mark of 6.11m/20-0.50, adding five points to the Hoosiers total at the Big Ten Indoor Championships.
Mahogany Jenkins finished sixth in the high jump at the Big Ten Indoor Championships and tied eighth at the conference’s outdoor meet.
Grayson Rolen finished seventh in the high jump at the Indoor and Outdoor Big Ten Championships. He finished 36th at the NCAA East First Round in the high jump.
The Hoosiers saw great success in the jumps and the women's multis in 2023 which featured a pair of Big Ten Champions in Paola Fernandez-Sola (outdoor long jump) and Hope Purcell (indoor pentathlon). IU scored 16 points in the women's long jump indoors and outdoors at the Big Ten meet with Fernandez-Sola and Serena Bolden scoring at both meets. Purcell followed up her title indoors in the pentathlon with a bronze medal finish outdoors in the heptathlon.
Robert Blue scored in the long jump and triple jump outdoors on the men's side while Grayson Rolen contributed a fourth-place finish indoors in the high jump.
Fernandez-Sola made IU history in 2023, becoming the first woman in program history to earn All-American honors in the long jump both indoors and outdoors in the same year. She was ninth indoors in Albuquerque and was 15th outdoors in Austin. She also became the first women's long jumper in program history to earn All-American honors outdoors in consecutive years. The San Juan, Puerto Rico native won IU's first women's long jump Big Ten title outdoors since 2007.
2022 was a premier season for Erb's jumps squad. Paola Fernandez-Sola was fifth at the Big Ten Indoor Championships and third at the Big Ten Outdoor Championships in the long jump. She broke the outdoor school record in the long jump with a mark of 6.61m/21-8.25. and advanced to the NCAA Outdoor Championships, finishing as a Second Team All-American. Mahogany Jenkins cleared 1.81m/5-11.25 in the high jump both indoors and outdoors, advancing to the NCAA Outdoor Championships in an epic jump-off at the NCAA East Prelims in Bloomington. Jyles Etienne and Grayson Rolen both cleared 2.14m/7-0.25 in the high jump at the Big Ten Outdoor Championships enroute to fourth and fifth place finishes respectively.
Under the guidance of Erb in the 2021 season, Leah Moran was once again crowned Big Ten Outdoor triple jump champion with her school record mark of 13.56m/44-6. She went on to qualify for the NCAA East Preliminary Round as well as the NCAA Outdoor Championships where she earned Second Team All-American accolades in the long jump. Moran ended her collegiate career at the U.S. Olympic Trials where she made the final of the triple jump and finished in 10th overall. Freshman Mahogany Jenkins made the most of her first season by placing seventh at the indoor conference championships and third at Big Ten Outdoor Championships. She also made an appearance at her first NCAA East Preliminary Round.
The performances Hoosier athletes have produced in recent years under Erb’s guidance are impressive. Triple jumper Eric Bethea was a two-time Indoor Big Ten Champion and Indoor All-American (2017 and 2019). He was an Outdoor All-American in 2019, finishing seventh with a mark of 16.65m/54-7.5. Leah Moran was the 2019 Outdoor Big Ten Champion in the triple jump and 2020 Big Ten Indoor Champion in the long jump.
Jenna Jungels was the 2019 Indoor Big Ten Champion in the long jump while Jyles Etienne was the 2020 Indoor Big Ten Champion in the high jump. Etienne also qualied to the 2019 NCAA Outdoor Championships. Treyton Harris Big Ten Champion indoors in 2017 and also earned All-American honors. Erb also coached Jakub Andrzejczak to a podium finish in the long jump at 2020 Big Ten Indoor Championships.
Prior to joining the Hoosiers, Erb’s coaching career featured stops as both a head coach and assistant coach.
New Orleans (2013-14)
Erb returned to head coaching in 2014 at the University of New Orleans as head coach of the Cross Country and Track and Field Teams. In the program’s first season following a five-year hiatus due to Hurricane Katrina, 17 school records were broken, and Erb coached four athletes to the first round of the NCAA East Preliminary Round, as well as the first-ever NCAA Finals competitor in Estonian decathlete Karl Saluri.
Illinois (2009-13)
Erb was an assistant coach under the guidance of Olympian Tonja Buford-Bailey at the University of Illinois. In those five years, Erb coached 10 student athletes to All-American performances, six to Big Ten individual championships and nine school-record holders. He also played a key role coaching the Illini women to a Big Ten team title in 2013, earning him a Great Lakes Region Assistant Coach of the Year nomination.
Redlands (Calif.) (2002-07)
He began his coaching career at the University of Redlands (Calif.), where he was the Head Coach for both Cross Country and Track and Field. During his five-year tenure, he coached the men’s program from last place in the conference to consecutive Top-10 finishes at the NCAA Division III National Championships in 2006-07. Erb coached NCAA Champions in four different events – decathlon, javelin, triple Jump and long Jump – eight First-Team All-Americans, 20 NCAA qualifiers and 152 All-Conference performers at Redlands.
He coached two-time NCAA Division III Javelin Champion Corey White, who went on to win the USATF Junior National meet and ultimately represent Team USA at the Pan American Junior Championships, where he earned a silver medal with a then-best throw of 228-10.
Personal
Erb received his undergraduate degree in environmental science in 1998 from Allegheny College in Pennsylvania, where he was a decathlete and jumper from 1994-98, earning two conference titles in the triple jump. He also received his Master of Arts in Higher Education Administration from Redlands in 2005.
Erb is certified as a USATF Level II coach in the jumps and throws and is a USATF Level I instructor.
