Bye began his coaching journey at IU as a volunteer assistant from 1996-98 before working six years at Louisville beginning in the fall of 1998. At Louisville he coached the sprints, hurdles, jumps and combined events before being elevated to the title of Women's Cross Country and Track and Field Head Coach from 2002-04.
For 13 years, Bye served as the head coach of South Florida, helping to maintain a women's roster of 75 athletes and implementing the men's indoor track and field program. He helped host Big East, AAC and NCAA East Prelims meets while coaching 22 All-Americans and 44 conference champions.
From 2019-2021, Bye worked at Lipscomb as the assistant coach for sprints and hurdles before joining IU's staff in 2022.
