Bio
JUNIOR YEAR (1982-83)
IU's leading scorer and rebounder Denise Jackson started in all 30 of last season's contests. A finalist in 1983 for the prestigious Wade trpohy, D.J holds the IU game, season and career records in rebounding. A bona fide All-American candidate she averaged 12.2 rebounds last year for a 366 season total, breaking her previous school record of 348 for most rebounds in a single season. That statistic also distinguishes her in IU's all-time men's and women's books as third in rebounding over one season behind Walt Bellamy (1961- 428) and Steve Downing (1972- 377). Her name is spattered throughout the league record book as well. The top rebounder last year in the Big Ten, Jackson was also the fourth best scorer, and was ranked nationally in both categories. Denise has produced so many outstanding games it is difficult to chose her finest, but the Big Ten honored her as "Player-of-the-Week" after a 51-point and 35-rebound performance in two games against Iowa and Minnesota. She also became the second woman in IU varsity history to score 1000 points and with her three-year total of 1,504, is the Hoosiers' all-time scoring leader. IU's Female Athlete-of-the-Year last season and the top vote-getter of the NCAA IV District All-America team, D.J., A smooth and classy player with, spinning, graceful insides moves, looks to make her last season the finest.
SOPHOMORE YEAR (1981-82)
While Denise Jackson may be the most complete player on the Hoosier squad, the biggest contribution of this season's co-captain is in the rebounding department. D.J. averaged a record-setting 11.6 rebounds last year for a 348 season total breaking her own school record of 274 for most rebounds in a single season. That statistic also distinguishes her in IU's all-time basketball books as fourth in rebounding over one season behind Walt Bellamy (1961- 428), Steve Downing (1972- 377) and George McGinnis (1971- 352). Her boardwork last season placed her 19th nationally according to NCAA women's basketball statistics, and she is currently just 16 rebounds awat from Sue Hodges' four-year IU career record mark of 637. D.J. holds the Hoosier record for rebounds in a single game as well as 22. Also superb as a scorer, Jackson's spinning, graceful, inside play accounted for a team-leading 17 points average in '81-82. That season's 510 points is an IU record for a single campaign and her two-season accumulation if 913 points ranks D.J. second only to Hodges' four year career sum of 1265 total points. She also holds tge record for most free throws made in a single game (15-18) and most consecutive free throws made in a single contest (10). Naturally such numbers warrant recognition, and D.J has gathered accolaids over her brief career. She earned a spot on Alaska's Northern Lights Invitational All-Tournament team this past season. As a freshman she was chosen to Indiana AIAW All-State team, was named All-Big Ten and Big Ten Player of the Week.
FRESHMAN YEAR (1980-81)
A smooth player with sure hands and graceful inside moves... Can also hit from the outside... Speedy... Rebounding proved to be her forte as a rookie... Broke school records with 22 boards in one game and 274 for the year... Averaged 7.4 rebounds per contest including 14 per game over the last 12 contests... added 11.4 points per game... Named "Big Ten Player-of-the-Week" for her performance at the Big Ten Championships where she scored 80 points and had 33 rebounds over three games... Also earned a spot on the All-Big Ten and IAIAW State Tournament Teams.
PREP
Indiana is many miles away from Miami Northwestern H.S. where Denise Jackson played for Donald Wallace, but this freshman should feel right at home when she steps onto the hardwood. Sporting a 27.0 ppg shooting average and hauling down 22 rebounds per game, Jackson couldn't miss being an All-American, an All-Stater, and an All-Conference team member. It seems likely that Jackson will continue to be an "All-Everything" at Indiana in 1980-81. Coaches look for smooth offensive work from this aggressive rebounder. She will also demonstrate good moves inside combined with the deadly outside shooting which produced her prodigious high school ppg.
